RE: PLUS!!!!
Good point Kathryn! If no one agreed to do this there wouldn't be a show. But where does it start? What makes a woman grow up believing she's an "ugly duckling" in the first place? Whom do we blame? Her parents? Society? Cosmo? No, I'm not being a smart-a** here, and I'm not trying to sound argumentative or challenging. I'm just asking everyone - not just Kathryn - how they believe this starts? I would really like to know what people think about this.
Those of you with daughters, what do you tell them when they ask you if you think they're pretty? Or too fat? Or too thin? Or any one of a hundred other related questions that young girls will ask their mothers? Those of you without children or without daughters, do your nieces or daughters of your friends ask you questions like this? Neighborhood children? There are so many influences on a young person's life. This idea of "I'm not pretty" has to start somewhere. We aren't born thinking that way.
Reality shows are over the top, IMHO. But the ratings must be there, or Fox wouldn't keep making them. They couldn't stay in business if they made shows no one watched. America wants to see this. Not all of America, but a good portion of it must be watching all this garbage. (OOPS ... did I say "garbage" out loud? LOL!!)
Seriously though ... just so you all know, the whole attitude that society or Cosmo or the fashion industry or whomever should dictate what is or is not "beautiful" makes me vomit. My daughter is 13, and she comes home everyday talking about some obsession or rant they had at school concerning looks, or dress, or other related things. I realize teens this age are super-conscious about their appearance, but already Nik is getting mixed messages about her body image. I tell her one thing, but her friends and TV tell her another. What do you do? Put them in a bubble and never let them out? That's not the answer. Ban TV? A bit extreme, in my opinion. Homeschool? That's fine, but they still need to go out into the world one day and be social beings. It boggles my mind at times. How do I help her grow up in a world where unless you're a stunning "beauty" with a killer bod and perfectly shaped eyebrows you're "ugly"??? NONSENSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay ... I'm done ranting now. This is a great thread!! I also want to say that although I am addicted to American Idol (a Fox show), I will NOT be watching "The Swan".
