The Swan?!!

Ok, I'm ok with extreme makeover, I'll even watch it sometimes. It intregues(sp?), fine, whatever. But honestly folks, I'm sorry, but The Swan? Have any of you seen the advertisements for this new Fox show? In both my Dh's and my opinions this show is telling women that they can't be beautiful without plastic surgery. I'm a little disapointed with the Fox network for putting this one out.

Kathy

Kathy,

I was really surprised about that show also. Did I hear correctly that the women aren't allowed to see themselves until the "transformation" is complete?

Gina

Right Gina! They will be in a place with no mirrors for about two months if I remember right.

Fox is really digging at the bottom of the barrel for "reality" shows. Did you see "the Littlest groom"? It was an insult to little people, IMO.

Yep. I agree. The tag line at the beginning of the commericial on Fox goes something like ... "These women never thought they could compete in a beauty pageant .." I'm paraphrasing, but the feeling you get from listening is that the only way these women were made "beautiful" was through extensive plastic surgery. HOGWASH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are all beautiful, because we are human beings, and because we are women. Period. Only my opinion of course, but I see "beauty" in all people.

PLUS!!!!

Plus, they said the MOST beautiful will go on to compete in a Miss beauty pageant! Meaning what? That some won't be as beautiful as others when they are done with them????

I cringe every time that commercial comes on. I really hate when they call the women ugly ducklings before the surgeries. I'd much rather be watching the shows on Discovery and FitTv that focus on people changing their lives through lifestyle changes instead of surgery.

And let's not forget that there would NEVER be a show if it concerned MEN!!!!! Aarrgghh! MEN are NEVER considered "ugly ducks". This makes me so mad I could spit!!!! Needless to say, I really wish people would STOP watching these shows & get on w/life. Have a good day everyone! Kathy:D

According to the commercial, after the surgeries (which they will probably downplay..they never seem to show the painful recoveries), not all of them will be eligible to be in the contest. So, before the show, they were rejected because they were "ugly ducklings"," and now, even after surgery, they are going to be told they aren't pretty enough.

You know, if no one agreed to do this, there wouldn't be a show. I just don't get people seemingly wanting to do anything to be on T.V., or to air their dirtiest laundry in front of the whole country.

RE: PLUS!!!!

You're right Katherine. I hope that none of these women have daughters. And if they do, I hope that their daughters don't look anything like them. I only say this because you know that their daughters are going to have a complex about how they look for the rest of their lives unless they have plastic surgery too then. I mean, it's hard enough with us women always being hard on ourselves, but then if you look like your mom and she went out and got plastic surgery to redo her entire face and body, wouldn't you think, gee? maybe I'm an "ungly duckling" too?
I don't know, maybe not, but I would think that would be the case.
I'm ok with a little bit of plastic surgery, but to have so much done that you seriously don't look like yourself when they are done, that is just going too far.
Ok, I'm off my soap box now.

There might be a solution to those shows:

- Don't watch them

- Complain to the advertisers

- Complain to the broadcasters

I am talking millions of emails/phone calls/letters!!!!!

What people do to get on TV! First they were abandoned, then scared, then they had to date, eat bugs, and now they are surgically altered.

I am sorry, the Reality TV people are just plain STUPID in my book. I would never want to be bossed around like that and do anything and everything with a big smile on my face - just to be on TV. The producers are beginning to think they are GODs, they think that cast (actually they are SHEEPS) have to do whatever they want.

RE: PLUS!!!!

Good point Kathryn! If no one agreed to do this there wouldn't be a show. But where does it start? What makes a woman grow up believing she's an "ugly duckling" in the first place? Whom do we blame? Her parents? Society? Cosmo? No, I'm not being a smart-a** here, and I'm not trying to sound argumentative or challenging. I'm just asking everyone - not just Kathryn - how they believe this starts? I would really like to know what people think about this.

Those of you with daughters, what do you tell them when they ask you if you think they're pretty? Or too fat? Or too thin? Or any one of a hundred other related questions that young girls will ask their mothers? Those of you without children or without daughters, do your nieces or daughters of your friends ask you questions like this? Neighborhood children? There are so many influences on a young person's life. This idea of "I'm not pretty" has to start somewhere. We aren't born thinking that way.

Reality shows are over the top, IMHO. But the ratings must be there, or Fox wouldn't keep making them. They couldn't stay in business if they made shows no one watched. America wants to see this. Not all of America, but a good portion of it must be watching all this garbage. (OOPS ... did I say "garbage" out loud? LOL!!)

Seriously though ... just so you all know, the whole attitude that society or Cosmo or the fashion industry or whomever should dictate what is or is not "beautiful" makes me vomit. My daughter is 13, and she comes home everyday talking about some obsession or rant they had at school concerning looks, or dress, or other related things. I realize teens this age are super-conscious about their appearance, but already Nik is getting mixed messages about her body image. I tell her one thing, but her friends and TV tell her another. What do you do? Put them in a bubble and never let them out? That's not the answer. Ban TV? A bit extreme, in my opinion. Homeschool? That's fine, but they still need to go out into the world one day and be social beings. It boggles my mind at times. How do I help her grow up in a world where unless you're a stunning "beauty" with a killer bod and perfectly shaped eyebrows you're "ugly"??? NONSENSE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay ... I'm done ranting now. This is a great thread!! I also want to say that although I am addicted to American Idol (a Fox show), I will NOT be watching "The Swan".

YES! Don't watch them is good. It works in my house. But you're right - to effectively change something we must first let the people in charge know how we feel!!

I've stopped watching Fox because of this show... it was the last straw for me. The only Fox show I watch is "24," and I record that and zap the commercials. I don't want my boys seeing promos for that garbage. This stuff affects boys as well, not just girls. I don't want them being dissatisfied with their lovely friends who are girls because they think girls have to be what the modeling industry considers beautiful. I don't want my boys to start thinking their own looks are lacking because they don't look like Brad Pitt (although I think my boys are very handsome.)

Well, maybe the men are considered ugly ducks sometimes. Did you see Average Joe? I think Fox is doing it all when it comes to what they call "Average Joes" "Ugly Duckings", "Little People". It doesn't surprise me.

Jenne, I think that's a very good point, and I hadn't even thought of that. I don't have a son, but I never thought of what shows like this must do to their expectations of how girls "should" look, not to mention what it must do to their expectations of how they are "supposed" to look.

"24" looks like a really good show - I'll have to watch that sometime since it's on right after "American Idol". :)

I heard about this show on the radio on the way home from work today. NPR was doing a spot on it. I thought "weird, that's taking things a bit too far". Then I was flipping through the channels and saw the add. The part where they illiminate one of the contestants every week seems especially sick to me. Why does this remind me of Rome and Gladiators? Our society is on entertainment overload. I will boycot Fox as well. TV is starting to scare me!!!!

There is a lot of beauty out there. People are so obsessed with physical beauty they miss so much!

I agree. There is so much beauty all around us, and it's not society's "ideal" of beauty. The way a person's face lights up when they smile, a kind word, a compassionate hug from a good friend just exactly when you need it ... the list could go on forever!

I just watched it!

Okay, I have to say that I was happy for those two girls tonight. They feel so much better about themselves now. It's kind of like getting braces. You have really crooked teeth, so you get braces to fix them right?

I don't think they looked too bad before but when someone has a deformity somewhere it makes them feel better to get it fixed. Kind of like if you get your front tooth knocked out, or your teeth never even grow in, you go get a fake tooth, it's kind of the same to me.

I'm happy for them that they feel so much better about themselves now.

JMO. :)
