The SAME 20 pounds

How many times have you lost the same 20 pounds?

I have have lost and gained the same 20 pounds three times now. I am now on try number four.

I am doomed, aren't I? The older I get, the more frightened I become that I'm going to be fat like my grandmother. And there's nothing I can do to stop it. No amount of exercise or eating clean or counting this or that is going to change things.

Are some of us really just prisoners of our genetics?

:-(

Well, we can get there and stay there thru continious exercise and eating right... but if you ever stop your in trouble lol.... Rhonda:7

I think it says a lot that you're still trying. It took me 4 tries & I THINK I'm here to stay this time. But if not, I'll just start again. I won't give up, & I don't think you will either.

I understand your fears. It does get harder the older you get, that's a fact. But not impossible! Not as long as you have breath in your body & two feet to stand on. Just keep truckin! You'll find your way. And always come here if you're tempted to give up, because these ladies just won't let you! ;-)

Hugs to you because your writing suggests you are very disheartened and discouraged at the moment.

Hang in there hon, because your only DOOMED if you continue on this NEGATIVE thaught pattern you have going on.

Start to think positive and dont feel so bad about how many times you have taken a step forward, and two steps back. Sometimes the weight loss journey is full of cross roads and roundabouts, but Ruth is right. The fact that you are STILL trying, means you HAVEN'T GIVEN up just yet.

Perhaps you need a weight support group like WW, perhaps you need to look at your exercise reshem, perhaps you just need to refocus on other things good in your life, and not so much focus on your weight.

You ARE NOT destined to be <<fat>> like your Grandmother..............if you dont want to be!!

You can do it........you are in control, not the food

No, you're not doomed - you did not make a lifestyle change when you lost weight before - you went back to your old habits. It's your choice how you look, not the fault of your genetic makeup.

My sister's weight goes up and down and mine does not because I food journal and exercise. No magic.

So don't make excuses, join Weight Watchers and do your Cathe workouts.

Omigosh--I bet if I added up the 5 lbs I've gained & lost on a regular basis it'd come to something like 200 lbs in 2004. Don't get discouraged--we all go through it. In fact I'd wager our beloved Cathe has gone through it herself.

I don't believe "we can all get there and stay there through continuous exercise and eating right" because I tried for ten years to no avail. I also believe it's unfair to most to make a blanket statement like that.

Due to heredity and other health factors this may be an impossibility for some. The key word in that statement is "THERE" because, maybe I'm not meant to be 115 like I used to be. Maybe I need to re-look at my goals because I'm older, or I'm lifting heavy weights now or all the other variables that determine what I will weigh.

I think the first thing to do is to make sure the "THERE" is still a realistic goal. Just my four cents.

I think also you can never be sure what life will throw at you - a change of job, an illness in the family, selling or buying a house, taking care of little ones.

Eventually something will get in your way and throw you off your program. Unfortunately, sometimes you need to focus more energy on your life and less to your exercise/eating program.

And for those of us who seem to struggle over and over and over with keeping the weight off, the results can be devastating, even with trying to be careful.

Ah, then again maybe I'm just trying to make excuses for my failures.

I really wonder about the genetic thing too. When I compare the tremendous amount I eat with the little amount my overweight friend eats I really wonder if she isn't fighting genetics. She has to work so hard to loose weight I really feel for her. I really don't believe we are all created equal. I wouldn't want anyone to use it as an excuse though. I think I've been blessed with good genetics. My mom had 10 kids and when my dh first saw her he thought she was one of my sisters! My older sisters all look great. In fact they are getting leaner as they age! My aunts on my mom's side are in their 70's and 80's and you wouldn't guess it - they look great too. I saw a pic of my grandmother years ago and she's got better cuts than I do and I'm sure she thought "working out" was doing the work at someone else's house! It does seem like something genetic is going on here.

I wouldn't be surprised either, if there was a connection between where you come from ancestor-wise and how your body uses and stores food. There must be some sort of connection between the availability of food, the weather, and whether your heritage comes from an agrarian or nomadic lifestyle, etc., among other things.
