The Paperless Society

Hello,

As my printer ran out of ink this week, and I browse the info sites about the iPad, I was struck by the notion, Do we really need printers any more?

Almost 30 years ago people in the computer peripherals industry said, "We'll have a paperless company", and following that, nearly every computer marketed for the next 30 years either came with or was compatible with any number of printing devices.

According to PCWorld, the iPad does not have any print capacity or icon, though I'm sure it's only an app away. My question is , Do we really need to print anything anymore?

The only time my printer gets used is when my teenagers' teacher INSIST something gets printed. Really??!!

I'm a proposal writer, and I don't see my world becoming paperless anytime soon. For the life of me, I can't understand why procurement offices still ask for paper submittals. My favorites are the ones that require soy ink, recycled paper, double-sided pages, and that I answer two pages of questions about our recycling policy and our "green" procedures, but turn around and ask for at least eight copies of the document!!! (The EPA has done this...a few times!)

As for my personal life, I still have to print out train, airline, and concert tickets.

About the only things I print anymore are coupons that are emailed to me, and my boarding pass when I fly.

I think more and more both of these type things will be available on smart phones. I know they already are in most cases.

I only print for kid's stuff - schools are still very paper-based, just look into a child's backpack!

Recently starbucks had an online coupon that you could just show them from their phone instead of printing - which I liked. Borders (the one I go to at least) will let you do that too.

I print our weekly schedule and post it on the fridge. That way everyone in the family knows what is going on without pestering me constantly. My daughter has to print out lots of things for school.

I print stuff out a lot at work, have too and I don't see that changing much anymore.

The only thing I print out at home are my checking account statements and some Avon orders. Other then that, I hardly use my printer anymore. In fact, it's been out of ink for about 6 months now. I use the one that is in my dh's office. LOL!

I also print the most at work. At home, it's boarding passes and spreadsheets to keep track of how much I'm lifting ;)

We print a lot of pictures. With all digital cameras, we no longer take film in to develop and use our printer.
