The Obligatory Exerciser

Yes, that's good advice. Definitely worth knowing what the limits are. Sometimes it's a fine line between committed discipline and a compulsive addiction.

Thank you for posting that.

I admire people who are very moderate by nature, I do, but for those who tend to be of a nature to become overly committed, I think having positive addictions is far better than many alternatives. That is not to say that I am not eternally trying to become more moderate because it's an ongoing battle. I do so admire those sensible folk who never seem to overdo anything. It's why I like Buddhists so much. The Middle Way. :) I agree it can be overdone but I rather see someone over commit to exercise than to overeat or work 18 hours a day, snacking on Oreos. In the case of injury, I have learned that you only get one chance to heal and it's best to lay off for as long as it takes. I learned that the hard way. ;) The older I get, the more moderate I am capable of being too. My advice is to be certain to have several friendsor fellow exercisers who are capable of moderation so they can talk you down when over doing it has you in it's grip. Also teaching oneself to know that one IS overdoing it. We are masters of self-delusion. Some of us, that is.

Thanks for posting the article. It's a great reminder for someone who learned, "Train samrt to train long" hobbling out of the podiatrists office too many times. :D

Interesting article and thanks for posting it. As a person who feels committed to excercise everyday with cardio and weights and rarely take a rest day I have been wondering if I over train. I still am unsure if I have crossed the line but do think I may benefit from a rest day. Now it is just a matter of making myself take it.

Bobbi-I like what you had to say :) By the way nice to see you:) I haven't posted after you in awhile. Have you seen the pumpkin latte at starbucks?? I am thinking of trying it. :)

It was indeed very interesting and a little scary as I seem to fit the mold for an obligatory exerciser. I'm sure that is going to be common here on this forum, however. I mean how many of us work very hard, journal all of our exercise and food, and always strive to keep improving our bodies. Most, if not all of us, right?

Thanks so much for posting it!!

Great article. There's an awful lot of it about, and a lot on these forums.

I think, however, that excerise compulsion is as bad as any other compulsion, so in this I disagree with Bobbi. To the extent that over-exercising leads to injuries, depressed states of mood, disatisfaction with one's self and disrupts relationships with others because the person views their exercise time as the most important part of the day, at the expense of husband and children or wife and children, then I think this is as bad if not worse than an oreo addiction.

I have a chocolate addiction and eat it every day. Nancy is addicted to ice-cream and eats a lot of it, with gusto ;-) . Neither of these "compulsions" is going to kill us. Neither isolates us from our families.

Exercise compulsion is another branch of mood disorders and should be taken seriously. If you never take time off from exercise, you have a problem.

Thanks for posting this Hotbikerchick: it's a timely reminder.

Bobbi, my dear, let me be that friend! I am SOOOO not compulsive about exercising, and I'm really good at coming up with excuses. :+

Yummm Terri!

Have you ever had Dairy Mart's Pumpkin Cappuccino? If not, don't! They are tooo good. I wrote the company and asked how many fat grams were in the large size I was getting on a REGULAR basis...GUESS HOW MANY?.....................FORTY! Yikes! Now, if I splurge, I go in and put 3/4 decaf and the rest pumpkin and believe it or not, it's almost as good. :9

RE: Yummm Terri!

Hi Debbie,

I have never heard of Dairy Mart and wonder if they have them here in Denver. I always order decaf and skim milk when I go to starbucks. Thanks for the info :)

Wow. Definitely a very interesting article (thanks so much for sharing it!!)....I really had to do a reality check to see if I fit the bill. I decided since DH likes to call me "the slacker" now and then (when it comes to exercise) I can't actually call myself an "obligatory exerciser." I do feel I am more committed than the average person, but so are most people on this forum...hehehe (love you guys!).;-) Anyway, I've never continued working out through an injury, but then again, I've never had one to speak of. I have worked out through mild colds, but took days off when I've been really ill. I try to keep it all in perspective.:9
