The Cove

Have any of you seen this movie? It was on the Green Planet channel last night (not sure if it's been on before). It's about the capture of dolphins to turnaround and sell them to trainers. OMG, this little "secret", (nightmare really) is absolutely horrible. Here's a quick synopsis taken from the web.......follow "filmmakers and freedivers as they embark on a covert mission to penetrate a remote and hidden cove in Taiji, Japan, shining a light on a dark and deadly secret. Utilizing state-of-the-art techniques, including hidden microphones and cameras in fake rocks, the team uncovers how this small seaside village serves as a horrifying microcosm of massive ecological crimes happening worldwide. The result is a provocative mix of investigative journalism, eco-adventure and arresting imagery, adding up to an unforgettable story that has inspired audiences worldwide to action."

It's interesting that the dolphin trainer from the tv series "Flipper" is the feature. He seems like an incredible person. Good for him for doing what he's doing!

What do you all think?

I watched this with my dad a few months ago. His worker gave it to him and initially we thought it was a movie, not a documentary. It was so horrible, I couldn't even believe the stuff that was going on!!! I cried through the entire thing. I saw that it was on last night and could never bring myself to watch it again. Such a horrible, horrible thing that they do; it's inhuman. I've never been so infuriated in my life.

We plan to watch it as soon as it becomes an Instant Play on Netflix. It's been on my list, but haven't gotten to it yet. I've heard some interviews on the radio.

I watched it and cried as well. The documentary is unforgiving of the fishing/whaling industry. Today, sadly, marks the first day of Japan's annual dolphin hunt. It saddens/horrifies me to even think about it.

There was also a big controversy about the movie actually being shown in Japan -- the theaters were originally banned from showing the movie (it being seen as a denigration of Japanese culture), but someone sent 100 copies to Japan hoping friends would show friends and spread the word. It worked and it was finally released and shown July 3rd of this year (and not without major protests).

I don't believe most Japanese people know about the hunt (In that sense, it sounds just like factory farming to me -- most people don't know or want to know what's happening.), but you certainly can't stop it unless you make people aware.

I believe animal planet will be doing a series later in the year on the Cove. Hopefully, it will enlighten even more people.

Yes, I saw this movie several months ago and cross-posted at several forums. I was very affected by this documentary.

My kids watched it with me and we agreed to boycott Seaworld. Those magnificent and intelligent animals should not be held in what is equivalent to a bathtub for them. It's horrible.

I'm so glad it's getting more viewership.

Oh that's right, today is the first day of the hunt, darn, that's just so sad! It is "infuriating". I continually asked myself thru the whole thing "why?". I missed part of it so maybe they said why the slaughter? Not that any of it was ok, but I don't understand why they didn't just release some of them?

They did a great job on the movie, it really was compelling. Really made you want to do something about it. I too plan to boycott Seaworld, etc. If you get a chance there's also a couple of petitions at the website that you can sign.

Thanks for the recommendation - I'll have to watch it....I'll add it to my list of must-sees along with Food,Inc. Sounds like both are life changing.
