The 35W bridge collapse

Hi everyone,

We just had one of our major highway bridges collapse during rush hour (Twin Cities, MN). I don't know if it is on the news where you are, but it is on every channel here. The grief of these families is palpable. My husband is an emergency worker is deployed to help find victims and help in whatever way possible. We just had a major rain/hail storm go through to make their jobs even harder.

I am just overwhelmed with grief for these people and I would love it if you could send positive energy or prayers to all of those affected in this tragedy.

Thank you.

I just read it on the internet. I'm sure it's on the news everywhere. What a terrible tragedy!
All my grandparents and both my parents are from Minneapolis . I just sent the internet story to my mom. She knows many , many people who still live there.

I am praying for all the people who are affected by this , including rescue workers like your husband.

It's all that's on the 24 hour news channels. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and rescue workers.

I am in the Northwest and just saw it on the news. I'm just sitting here in disbelief. My heart goes out to everyone there and their families. This is a terrible tragedy.

It's been on our local news channels...what a horrible tragedy! Please thank your husband for what he does and I will be keeping all those involved in my thoughts and prayers.

I've been watching it on the news during my breaks at work. I'm waiting for word on what caused it. A co-worker said someone rammed a vehicle into a base support (evidently, causing a domino effect) but I heard nothing about that when I was catching CNN. Terrible.

DH and I live in a nearby suburb near Minneapolis, and I work in downtown Minneapolis as well. I'm absolutely heartsick, and there's a surreal sense to it.

This really reminds me of another horrific bridge collapse back in summer 1979, when I was attending college in St. Petersburg, FL; a ship crashed into one of the spans of the Skyway Bridge that connected south St. Pete to (?; I should know this but I can't remember). The span was taken completely out.

After reading the headline and seeing this post, I immediately thought of AJ, our aqua lady, and Marcia on the Cheetah forum. AJ I am glad to read that you are safe and am so sorry about the great loss in your community. Lets pray that Marcia checks in with us soon.

PS- AJ Happy belated sobriety anniversary and B-day :)

If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.

WOW - unreal! I saw this last night and just sunk in my chair. We travel on that road a lot and I just can't believe it!

Thank you, Judy, for your care and concerns wondering if I was OK, thank you so much! :) We live about an hour south of that bridge, but like I said travel on it a lot.

My prayers go out to all of those involved.

I'll be back soon, need to get to work, but wanted to check in quick that I'm Ok.

Marcia.

How terrible! I haven't turned on the TV for a while and hadn't heard. I'm so sorry for all involved. It reminds me of when that bridge collapsed in the San Francisco area several years back.

So glad you're okay, Nettie. I, too, am in Minneapolis and find this simply surreal.

Jo-Jo, Jules, Kathy02, other MNers??? I pray you're all right.

My brother and sister-in-law were at the Twins game last night. I haven't been able to reach them, but they wouldn't have taken that bridge to get to the game. I have a friend whose boyfriend saw the whole thing happen. I just pray that they find everybody else safe and that the injuries from here on out, if there are any, are minor in nature.

Everybody's families and loved ones are currently in my thoughts and prayers.

they did a special report last night before i went to bed and they keep updating on nbc this morning. i was happy they reported a school bus of kids managed to get themselves out of the bus and out of harms way with minimal injuries. its so so sad and i pray everybody will be okay and feel for those families who did lose somebody. i really hope they find out exactly what caused this instead of guessing for the media about "cracks" in the bridge.

Thank you to everyone for sending your prayers to the victims of this tragedy. I feel a strong link to this bridge since it is only 10 minutes from my house. I drove over this bridge every day for over a decade and it just seems like a fixture in my life.

My husband was on the water last night helping look for victims. Fortunately the rain we had here in Shoreview (10 min N of the bridge) was only a few drops by the time it got to the scene of the accident. Last night after dark at the debriefing the operation went from rescue to recovery.

My husband also works for the DOT as a traffic engineer. Our DOT instituted the emergency plan early this morning. Once again my husband headed there at 4 am this morning, this time as a DOT emloyee. I talked to him this morning and he said it is absolutely surreal. For those of you not from around here 35W is one of our major roads and where it collapsed is right where it leads to downtown proper from the northern suburbs.

As with so many tragedies it brings people closer together. I did not know how many of you were from MN. I always felt sort of alone in my love for Cathe, but now I know there are a lot of you very close to me. So look for me out and about wearing my Cathe hat.

Also from MN....I've been over that bridge so many times. DH had tickets to the Twins game but we hadn't left yet. We take the 35W bridge to get to the dome so we were just shocked. DS girlfriend told us her mother had just driven on the bridge about 15 minutes before the collapse. It is so surreal.

Sending thoughts and prayers to all affected and for the safety of the workers involved in rescue/recovery.

JJ

I read a lot about this over the last few days: I'd driven up to Minnesota for a wedding, and it was the front page story at every Minnesota rest stop I stopped at.

This is really just a horrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims, families and everyone involved with the rescue.
