The 2 year old who smokes cigarrets?!?!?!?!

What in the h**l are wrong with the parents who ENCOURAGE their 2 year old obese son to smoke 2 packs a day?!?!?!?:mad:

That is tantamount to child abuse!!!!!!!! I was absolutely infuriated when I heard about and saw the report!!!!!

Can you say KARMA!?!?! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! Why don't those a-hole parents just toss their child into the mouth of a crocodile or under a bus- literally!!!!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!

Pam

Wow, just wow. I'm almost speechless. I didn't believe the headlines until I watched the video. This is sooooo disturbing!! As a pediatric respiratory therapist, I talk a lot to parents to stop smoking, but I've never had to discuss smoking cessation with a 2 year old!!

I was shocked when I saw this too. I wonder if people in Indonesia are just not educated about the harmful effects of smoking?? His dad even said "I'm not worried about his health, he looks healthy"!!!!! And it seems like they live in a poor village, how the heck do they afford that! This child needs to be taken away asap.

I also seen this on Fox 8 and wondered if it was real? The footage looked fake to me. But I don't know, maybe it was real. If so, I think it's disgusting. And they said something about the kid throwing a tantrum if he doesn't get his 3 packs a day. (Fox said 3 packs) WTH??? Slap his little behind and put him in his room for goodness sakes. What 2 year old rules a house? Unreal....

I know I'm probably not aloud to say "slap his behind" because god forbid someone will shout abuse. But a little spanking goes along ways. Abuse is one thing, discipline is another.

One can only pray this isn't real!!! Take the cigs away and get that kid some exercise to get through the withdrawl process!!!

I agree with fitnessfreak -- he needs a good "whipping"! And then the parents should be next in line! The report I saw said that it's common for young kids to smoke in that country -- cigarettes are very cheap. But that was just disgusting seeing that little guy smoke. It's bad enough when kids get older and "choose" to smoke (when they know the dangers, etc.), but this little guy has no idea of the dangers. The parents should be ashamed!!

I thought the same thing. This kid handled a cigarette with way too much finesse so I wasn't convinced. I also questioned HOW it got to this point cuz it's not like a kid would instantly like smoking (not that it should have ever been introduced in the first place). You'd think if he tried it and started coughing he would stop so I am convinced these nut job parents pushed it. I also don't think it's convenient that the gov't is willing to give them a free car if they make their son stop.

Trust me, . . . .before you "poo poo" this it is a cultural thing. I know that here in America it seems appauling, . . but it happens way more often than you think in other countries. Where my parents are from you'll see kids as young as 5 smoking and at the age of 7 driving motorcycles and cars. Where I grew up on Guam the locals including the children chewed bettle nut which is actually worse than smoking.
Oh and trust me on this if the child was taken away his circumstances would be far worse.
Smoking curbs the appetite and food is scarce in these places. Not that I think smoking is okay when I saw it for the first time when I was 13 years old it made me cry more than anything but really it isn't our place to understand a culture that we don't live in.

Hi Pam, all

Interesting take janie1234, on the cultural side of everyday practices. Not to dispense with the topic, but to relate another similar one. I recently saw a show, I think it was called "Weird or What?" In it the culture of the people included running, not a little running, alot, like not 10 or 20 miles at a time, but hundreds of miles, 100-200-300 miles at a time. Not just the young, but the older people too, all the people of this culture ran, all the time. They also drank a very low alcohol content drink for refueling, kinda like beer, but hardly any alcohol.

The show examined how these people run vs. how other people run, in bare feet for one thing & the way their stride was one that reduced impact on the body. I guess the idea that running is hard on the body, or joints, or that people can't run long distances without some ill effect is not necessarily true. There maybe be something genetic going on but I'm sure that doesn't account for all of it.

I can't remember the name of the country, but it was on that show not long ago. Thought maybe you all would like to here about another fantastical practice from another people in another place. :)

Pam, I think a lot of cultures do things for lots of reasons, and they indure for some of the reasons janie1234 described, just my opinion.

Hope you find this interesting

Thanks Linda I find this facinating. I wouldn't doubt that it has to do somewhat with genetics, upbringing, and culture. I find Australian aborigines or any type of tribal culture amazing. The fact that they can run for their transportation on bare feet nontheless and for miles and miles still amazes me. Esp when I'm spending $150 on a pair of high tech running shoes.
Linda there was a documentary on the National Geographic channel about 2 Kenyan runners who run the New York Marathon you might like.
http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/episode/taking-on-new-york-4564/Overview
I found it so interesting and very eye opening.

I'll check it out janie1234,

Weird or What is on DSC channel, & those people I spoke of were from South America, I believe. Just thought both non-runners & runners alike may be interested. Sorry about your dog, that's a shame.

thanks,

Linda

I think the running is truly facinating and promotes good health, doesn't destroy it like smoking does! I'm amazed when how graceful some people look when they run! Like it's effortless! Totally NOT how I look when I run!

There are soooo many studies and millions of deaths due to lung cancer and smoking, second hand smoke, etc.. It's just sooo very sad to see a baby doing it without understanding the very real and deadly consequences!!

I am especially senstive to lung issues because my son has had asthma and related issues since he was a baby (not from smoking beginning at 18 months old). To this day he still needs nebs when he is ill and emergency inhalers when it gets bad. It's incredibly scary to see your baby/child in the ER or being admitted to the hospital because his O2-sat drops below 90 (I have my own Pulse-Ox monitor, nebulizer, etc.. at home for my peace of mind). It is sooo very scary to see babies hooked up to all sorts of tubes. But, on the flip side, we are incredibly BLESSED to have such amazing medical advances and information in this country.

God help that little child.

Pam

Hi Pam,

I don't know how you moms do it, I think I'd keel over from the worry, I guess it's not that people elsewhere don't know any better, it's just they really haven't been exposed to the advantages we take for granted. Probably doesn't make you feel any better seeing a child like that, or knowing you have no power to change it, if you did, what would you do?

Moms probably are the most important people to institute change though because they're just more equipped, chief cook, bottle washer, wearing the pants & all that, seriously how do you guys do it all?....sorry it upset you so.....

I don't think a spanking would work...these parents have gotten this poor child ADDICTED TO NICOTINE! I don't think "spanking" a child for a parents OBVIOUS poor choice is going to work. The poor kid can't help being addicted! Just think if this was an adult smoking 3 packs a day and you suddenly took away those cigarrettes.....gives you something to think about.

Thanks Linda, . . . I'll check out Weird or What. I looked it up online. It really looks interesting. Something I would deffinitely watch. Thanks for the heads up on that.

Thanks for your comment about my dog. It still is very, very hard for me. I can't pass a doggie poop station, or see a tennis ball without thinking of him. :(
