Thanksgiving Ideas

Okay ladies, I need your creative imaginations! I am going to my (new) boyfriend's sister's house for Thanksgiving & I can't figure out what to bring! Of course, she said "nothing, just yourself," but I can't do that!

I thought of the "oldies but goodies" like wine, a desert, etc., and then I also thought about making a basket with wine, fruit, maybe some cookies, candies, etc. It's always a good idea to check here for some input though ;)

Any ideas?

Just my .02, Christine, but since this is likely your first time to meet some of your BF's family, and because Thanksgiving kind of opens Food Gift Season, I wouldn't bring food at all. I would bring some nice flowers for the host.

Otherwise, you're in danger of bringing dish X that is Aunt Emily's Traditional dish X and trample some toes!! ;-)

HAVE FUN!!!!!

Totally agree with Amy. Bringing food to a planned meal when you were told you didn't need to can actually screw things up for your host who probably had everything all arranged. I think flowers or even your idea of a basket with cookies/candy(those things can just be set out) is the best way to go.:)

I found something in one of my mom's old cookbooks that I tried and it was FABULOUS! I am bringing it to both my Thanksgiving invites

Sweet Potato Puff:

3 cups cold mashed sweet potatoes (without milk or butter)
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter or margarine melted
2 eggs, beaten
1/3 cup cold milk
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup flaked coconut

TOPPING:

1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
2 tbs butter or margarine melted
1/4 cup all-purpose flour

In a mixing bowl, beat sweet potatoes, sugar, butter, eggs, milk and vanilla until fluffy. Stir in coconut. Spoon into a greased 2 1/2 qt. baking dish. Combine topping ingredients until well blended sprinkle over sweet potatoes. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 35/40 minutes or until golden brown.

I am not typically crazy about coconut but it is so scrumptious.

I think I might have a yummy pumpkin dessert too I will look.

Good Luck with your decisions I am sure you will get many.

If anyone else takes a stab at this let me know what you think.

I have to agree with Amy G, Jennifer and Silbow. Since you don't know her, it is best to keep it very simple for now. She might appreciate a little help in the kitchen more than an item.

I'd suggest making sure you don't "give her any work." As mentioned above, cookies can be set out easily. So, if it's cookies, you might provide an appropriate platter (she won't have to dig for one). Likewise, if you choose fresh flowers, it would be nice if they were already cut and in a vase.

I know wine seems boring, but, as a hostess, I always REALLY appreciate having variety. Plus, it doesn't spoil if no one opens it. Maybe a sparkling wine would seem more special.

I just wanted to say congrats on the new boyfriend. When I see your posts I often wonder how you are doing. I guess I could have just asked, huh? :)

Anyway, have a great time with your new guy's family. And I vote for flowers or a fall centerpiece that can be put somewhere other than the dinner table in case that's already taken care of.

Thanks everyone for chiming in! I never even thought of the fact that I might make things more difficult or make more work if I don't bring the right thing! Okay, I will go with an easy to srve desert, flowers or wine.
