teeth whitening

Anyone out there have any experience with getting their teeth whitened? Embarassingly I have a slightly yellow-discolored front tooth (rest of my teeth pretty yellow too, despite not smoking and attentive dental hygiene on my part), and so I avoid smiling. I am really fed up with it and am wondering if I can just get the yellow bleached away. If you've had it done, how much did it cost and how long did it last? Thanks!

I have not had my teeth professionally whitened (too expensive) but have used Crest Whitestrips several times and they work pretty well. I would try that first, since $40 certainly beats $1000 or more.

I am in the process of doing that right now and am so pleased with the results!

I tried the Crest strips first but couldn't use them. They are VERY strong (peroxide I think) and after three days my gums were bleeding like crazy!

Then I read in the paper that dentists in town were offering teeth whitening at the reduced price of $175 with the proceeds going to an interfaith dental clinic (for low income people without dental insurance).

As luck would have it, my dentist was participating and I had an appointment scheduled the next week. So I asked her about it, and she said all the kits the clinic gave them were gone, but that she would do it for me with one of her kits for the same price!

BTW, prices have really come down since this first started - she originally charged $600-$800 but her regular price now is about $225-$250.

Anyway, she also gave me a kit that is for sensitive teeth. I am 4 days into it and can already tell a huge difference - and I don't have any problem with my gums bleeding!

So..you might want to check with your dentist to see if the prices have come down. If you have any sensitivy in your teeth, it would be worth working with a dentist.

I have used white strips also and have had great results.
They do make your teeth sensitive, after all, its the same bleach that's in the kits you buy from your dentist, just a little bit lower concentration.
I work for an orthodontist, and after braces come off,we often give away a freebie sample of them and I can tell a difference when people who have used them come back to get their retainers checked.

I have used both the Crest White Strips and the Colgate brush on stuff. Both worked really well. I actually went to www.crest.com and they sent me a $7 off coupon for Crest Renewal. I'll be purchasing it this week. I usually whiten 1 time per year. I find it works very well for me! Susan

My boss had some kind of teeth whitening done where they put some sort of light in your mouth for like an hour or so and I think it cost around $700. A while later she went and got trays made for her upper and lower teeth, she got the bleaching agent you put in the trays and they fit on your teeth like a glove and you wear them at night. They also give you a flouride toothpaste to help with the sensitivity. I think aol of it ran around $250. Her teeth REALLY lightened up after using the trays. She said she sleeps with them in a couple of nights a week. Maybe one day I'll try that.

It depends on the type of stain that you have if the whitening strips will work. If you've had the stain for a long time you most likely have an internal stain which is not easily removed by whitestrips since they are not very strong.

I have a bleach tray that I wear for an hour or two a day and have had great results and so have our patients (I'm a dental hygienist). It works much better on deeper internal stains(which it sounds like you may have). It depends on where you live but at our office it runs about $265 for the trays and bleach ($105 for each tray and $55 for the bleach solution)which is not bad considering you'll have it forever and the bleach solution will last a long time. I think this is definitely the way to go just because you don't want to spend money on whitestrips(around 30-40$) if you have to keep buying kits to get to the shade you want and then more kits to maintain your shade.

Also, we have quite a few people who when they talk or smile you can't see their lower teeth so they only bleach their uppers to begin with. Then, if you later decide to bleach the lowers that's fine. This way, your initial investment is only about $150.

Just my opinion:)

I've also used the Crest Whitestrips with great results. People see me drinking coffee and can't believe that I do that. My teeth are very white, and I'm pretty sure that it's the white strips that I've used in the past. I use them maybe every 18 months or so. But I don't think that my teeth were too yellow to begin with. I might have had unusual results.

I've tried the Whitestrips, but they didn't work on my teeth. It depends on the stain you have as well as the teeth you were born with. Some are more easily whitened than others and unfortunately, there's no way to know until you try it.

I had Zoom 2 done by my dentist with great results. My dentist told me that when Zoom first came out (Zoom 1) some people experienced sensitivity and they improved it with Zoom 2. I had zero problems with sensitivity after Zoom 2. It is pricey, but if strips don't work and you are self conscious about your teeth, it's well worth it.

Yes, I had great results. I went to the dentist and got a mold of my teeth done for the tray. It was about $250 including the bleach.
Now I just need to buy the bleach for maintenance.

I have whitened my teeth for years with the over the counter Rembrandt whitening gel (the kind that's in the little syringes). I don't use the whitening tray they provide, nor do I follow their directions! LOL. I wear a retainer each night from when I had braces, so I simply put a little gel in my upper and lower retainers about once every two weeks and leave it in overnight. The directions say to use it more frequently than this, but to use it for only an hour or two at a time. I didn't get results that way and my way has worked for me. Again, I have been doing this for years and have never had any problems except a bit of minor tooth sensitivity. Well worth it, in my opinion.
