My brother was the same. He swam competetively from about 5 years til 15/16. The second he stopped - splat! The weight piled on. He's lost a ton of weight over the last couple of years and is now an exercise fiend!
My sis, on the other hand, could slip sideways through a crack in the door. She eats whatever, whenever, does no intentional/formal exercise and has always been a rail.
