Teacher Appreciation Week ideas

I am looking for suggestions for an elementary student council group to do for teacher appreciation week. I have done the treats with cute messages. I have done a bulletin board with pictures/quotes about what makes their teacher special. I am looking for something different, cute and easy to pull together. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

You know we have the same problem every year. People always want to either bake a mega load of brownies or buy boxes of donuts at the local bakery...both ideas never appeal to me. Why do we always feel food should be a reward...and junk food at that! What I suggested this year was to get them all garden/yard plants that they can take home and enjoy. My suggestion was to go to a local garden club sale (which is this weekend) buy plants such as hostas, etc., pot them up and give those to the teachers. This particular garden club sells what they all grow in their own gardens so most of the plants offered for sale have been dug up and divided and are wrapped in paper. I would love a gift like that myself and it is something that each teacher can enjoy for years to come.

But I'm sure it will end up being treats again...it always is.x(

They also hate candles. Treats, candles, NO. I have heard from a lot of teachers on this once they were "off the record"

I don't know what kind of budget you're working with, but how about some type of gift certificates?

Hi,
I'm a teacher and I know that at our school we LOVE TREATS. For me it's a great treat since I don't normally buy or make sweets. Our PTA does a lunch for us with great desserts. The teachers love it and really appreciate it. Homemade baking is the best. Teachers are busy people and having someone provide us with a little nourishment as a treat once a year is fabulous. Way better than a waxy old candle.

Could you have the students make cards for each teacher? Construction paper, markers, and glitter- most would probably have it at home. A former first grade teacher I know has a fomemade card from a student on her mantle that means a lot to her.

We provide healthy breakfast foods(fruit trays, bagels, eggbeater omelettes, and healthy lunches too. We also provide gift certificates for the teachers to book stores, teacher supply stores, movie tickets. Our teacher appreciation week has each day of the week based on a different theme, circus, hawaiin, 50's and we try to decorate the teachers lounge daily for each theme; and then we base our healthy food choices around that. Us PTO parents really have a lot of fun braistorming and decorating. There is a raffle drawing at the end of the week for 2 teachers to win a "substitute for a day." Suggestions other than food include gift certificates for nearby restaurants, movie theaters, book stores, spa treatments, massage etc. We, the PTO usually have these gift certificates donated. We also include the janitorial and secreterial staff in our teacher appreciation efforts and they receive gift certificates as well.

Happy Planning:)

exactly how old are the kids? Mixed? Or all 5th graders?

This might make a difference in terms of us being able to suggest craft activities they could make.

Hi

At my daughter school, they do differnt things every day for 1 week.
Last year they did the following

Monday: Flower from your yard
Tuesday: Treat
Wedneday: Each student to make a card
Thursday: Supplies
Friday: Lunch

I really loved the supplies day last year. The teacher each made up a list of supplies that they wanted. It was things like markers, stickers, print paper, glue, you name it & you could spend as little or much as you liked.

This year they are having a "pamper you basket" day instead of supplies, but they always do Flower, treat & cards.

Hope this helps

Pia

Thanks for the suggestions. For some reason I had my dates mixed up. I thought it was the 2nd week of May. I have been so busy planning another program until I have not had time to meet with student council. I thought we could meet Monday to discuss, however, teacher appreciation week is actually next week. I like the raffle idea. That may be something we can easily pull off. We can probably do that for a few days. Thanks again.
