TAXES!!! Ugh!!

I don't know about other states but the California state budget seems to be in total disrepair. It just down right sucks. I love California for everything else, diversity, culture, beaches, nature, weather, farmers markets, art, . . . . but holy moly I can't believe how much I owe in State taxes. I've never had to pay this much before. I'm hoping Turbo Tax is wrong! I'm getting a nice big fat refund from my federal taxes but I owe a ton of money for state. What the heck! :( Does anyone else dread taxes as much as I do?

we went through the same crap. we actually got quite a bit less in federal b/c he made some cash tips but i can't believe for our income how much we owed to the state of VA. he isn't doing bartending anymore so hopefully it will be reversed next year and they OWE us money back LOL. i used to get what maybe $15 back from state every year LOL.

Dreading it this minute!

I should be preparing our corporate tax info for the accountant (due 3/15 -- guess I'll need an extension), and our personal taxes after that. I dread, dread, dread it every year because they are so complicated and take so long. And to add insult to injury, you often have to write a big check to the government as your reward for finishing.

Although I did get money back from the state last year -- $11!

Good luck with it ~ hang in there!

NY is the same way. I always end up owing the state $$ and I pay a lot in state taxes to begin with. For those NYers who are lucky enough to get a refund check this year, they might not be getting that until May because the state is so broke!! I don't get it...

I HATE TAX SEASON!

I'm so SICK of giving the government all my hard earned money. Once again, my dh and I owe again this year (federal). I'm sick of it. I have no clue how we are going to find this money and I'm stressing about it big time.

I'm sick of the government taking advantage of us. They tax everything we buy, our paychecks, our benefits. WTF???

I could go on and on, but what good would it do?

Debbie, I SO agree with you! We're self-employed, so we pay taxes all over the place. We even pay unemployment taxes, though DH and I (our only employees) aren't going to fire ourselves and collect!

I think the government does a very poor job of managing the money they take from us, then they just want to spend more and take more...

And even after you die, they still tax you on what you leave behind!

No kidding! My MIL just passed last year and my FIL complains about that. I'm really getting frustrated by it all. I am a stay at home mom. We are single income family and my husband makes enough that it puts us in the middle/high income bracket, . .so we don't qualify for anything and we make to much so we get taxed up the wazoo. It is so frustrating because we still would never be able to afford a house where we live a 3 bedroom runs for $800,000.00. Our rent is almost almost as much as a mortgage yet because of our income bracket we don't qualify for a renters write off or day care credit for the state. To make matters worse when my son was diagnoised autistic in 2001 we had to take money out of our 401k to pay for his therapy and we got taxed like crazy on that even though it was used to pay for medical expenses and yet these people who balance our state budget are still wearing their $1000.00 suits. Okay I'm done complaining. :(

We need to have the entire US not pay their taxes at tax time and revolt against them and then see what they will do. They can't put us all in jail.

Taxes can be frustrating but so can a place without: firemen, policemen, schools, public hospitals, roads, 911 service, mail, public libraries, parks, etc. But I agree - we should stop paying all of those people and get rid of all that useless stuff.

It would be a different story if we seen something positive happen with our taxes. They keep raising it and yet they keep cutting police force, teachers, etc. There are so many schools closing in our area due to how they throw money away - mostly on salaries for superintendents and the like - that now the teachers and children are paying for it.

Why on earth does a superintendent need to make over $100k a year??? What do they do that justifies that kind of money? And even though teachers never get a raise, you can bet your bottom the superintendents do.

This, for me, goes beyond frustration. It's neglect on the state and federal side of using our tax dollars the way they were PROMISED to be used.

Here's a good example: the city my mom lives in passed a "road" tax about four years ago to fix the horrible road conditions in this city. I bet I can count on ONE HAND how many roads have been fixed since that tax passed. WTF??? It's BS, plain and simple.

NY25, this was not directed at you, I just wanted to comment on the school and police thing. :)

No prob Fitnessfreak. I agree - they don't spend it well or efficiently. One of those necessary evils kind of thing. Although I will say - I wouldn't take $100K a year to clean up kid-puke, bathrooms, and everything else superintendents do. I wouldn't do that job. I actually think that's one of the more underrated jobs - worth $100K maybe not, but I never underestimate the value of someone who keeps the lights on and the place clean. (unless you're talking about the Superintendent of Schools type job which is strictly bureaucratic and then definitely not worth $100K - ha!)

The superintendents out here make that much and you can bet they don't clean up puke or the bathrooms. They push papers around their desks and that's about it. Now the teachers - yes, they should be the ones making substantial amounts of money. It's a crime how little they get paid.

I don't think it is underrated. I think that it is unappreciated. I don't mean to start a flame war here, my uncle works as a janitor for a hospital and cousin is a garbage man, . . and heck they get paid plenty and have better medical insurance than my family and he didn't pay $$$ mucho money for a college education or have to invest the time that either me or my husband had to. My cousin chose NOT to go to college but to do a hard job like garbage collecting BUT he gets paid tons to do it. It may not be glamorous but all in all he makes out in the positive at the end of the day. I mean my husband and I work hard to keep the lights on in our home and food on the table and we get killed in taxes every year. :(

if i had more of a say where my tax dollar went then this city wouldn't be worrying about school closures and cut police force b/c of budgets and put money into making jobs!

overall this country used to be you get what you earned but now its a something for nothing and all government, regardless of sides, are just willing to send it out like its nothing. what kind of example is this country setting for anybody, work hard don't get to keep your money and have to scrap by while others don't do crap and get your tax money that should be going to police, schools, and other such areas.

just makes me mad. yeah and then if you make a mistake on your taxes they TAX you some more with penalties and fees and possibly throw you in jail, over a mistake! like they don't make any themselves.

whew sorry about soapbox. i work at a school with many teenage mothers(and their mothers both) are proud to live off the system meanwhile good teachers and police offers might get cut in our city b/c of budget. makes no dang sense to me.

I am so on board with all this. We are having to pay $2400 to the feds this year due to a combination of circumstances, but mostly because I was laid off about a year ago and the only job I could find gave me a salary cut of 25% with no benefits - I adjusted my witholding so I would take home a little more thinking that my lower salary would put us in a lower bracket. NOT. I feel the same way everyone else does, I am paying taxes so the government can spend it on what? Guns and bombs for Iraq and Afghanistan? Maybe more bailouts for banks who mismanaged themselves into oblivion??? And more bonuses for the big money guys because, let's see, if we don't give them huge bonuses the company will not retain the "top talent" that put all those companies so close to failure that our money had to dig them out of their holes??? I really am furious about it. I also live in CA and don't get me started on how f*&*&^ up our government is. My boss sits on a governor's commission (she lobbies for funding for Alzheimers research and treatment for which, guess what, there IS no funding) and every time she goes to Sacramento she says it's worse and worse, the two sides sit across the aisle from each other and never agree on anything and just throw up roadblocks and bicker endlessly. Arnie is totally out of touch and ineffective. I am so very very disillusioned with the U.S. and with California. I remember growing up my mom would talk about the Great Depression, it affected her her entire life even though she was a little kid when it happened, and I think now I'm getting to be like her, I don't feel hopeful at all about the future.

I think they are just way too careless with where our money is going and something really needs to be done about it. Our taxes get raised every year; I've complained about this a lot (sorry!!) but it is so infuriating to hear that we are one of the highest taxed counties in the country, rates keep going up, and our services are going down!! We had 2 major snow storms this year and the road service was horrendous. I've never seen clean-up and preparation conditions this bad in my life. Then the county has the nerve to complain that if one more storm hits, they don't know what they are going to do about the roads because they are out of money. Granted, I know there is a separate budget for snow removal but still, are you kidding me? With all the tax money you're robbing...err, collecting...from us, there is no room to compromise somewhere else? It's a load of crap.

Then there is a coworker of mine who makes close to nothing, lives on food stamps and subsidized housing, meanwhile he came in to work last week bragging about a $1300 per year gym membership he just got with his wife. Really, you can spend $2600/yr on a gym cuz I sure can't and I pay for everything on my own. He also complains that his wife is totally capable of working but she thinks she doesn't have to because it's beneath her. They both got personal trainers too. Who is monitoring where their money is going? I'm sorry but if you can't pay for your NEEDS then you shouldn't be allowed luxuries like joining a spa/gym!!!!! Why not hire more social workers to keep cases like this to a minimum which will create more jobs in the process! I know there will always be people who cheat the system and you can't monitor every single thing that goes on but really, I'm sure a lot of stuff can be monitored more extensively. It just really aggravates me how politicians piss taxpayers' money away, meanwhile God forbid they don't get an insane kickback from something, then it's the end of the world. GRRRRRRR!!

Sorry for the rant...I actually feel a lot better now haha!

Of course I agree with both Meliffy and Diane. Meliffy - we are having the same crap about the snow removal and no more money to do so. Whatever. We are getting no more snow then usual out here so what is the deal?

Oh, and don't get me started on State funded housing. My dh works for a Section 8 property and there are so many losers living there on OUR money doing nothing when in fact, they are capable of working. They have new cars, huge screen TV's and get money back at the end of the year. WTF???

Dh and I keep saying we are going to quit our jobs, file for wellfare and then sit back and let the state take care of us. Why not? It seems easy to do.

I'm telling you, if the ENTIRE U.S. didn't pay their taxes at the end of the year, I'm sure that will put out a HUGE wakeup call.

I just wish there was a way to spread the word and actually do it.
