swollen ankle

Can anyone offer advice?

I got a pain at the back of the ankle doing Body Max the other day. I thought it was just the new Ryka's which were too tight so I tied and re-tied them and kept going, thinking it was just an ache. By the end, ache had developed to pain and by the evening, the back of my ankle was swollen. I can stretch the foot to do a flat foot, no trouble, I only really feel it if I point the toe, it all bunches up behind. I can rotate the foot and it does not snap or feel like a rubber band. I can walk on it, but step is out for the minute, I can't step down from the step and put impact on it without it hurting, so I haven't since then. I did a low impact dance routine yesterday and I can weight train, but cannot do any Cathe cardio routines just yet.

Does anyone know what this is likely to be? Tendon something or other? Does it sound serious? Have you ever experienced this? If so, how long did you rest it for in order for it to heal? or how long off cardio do you think I may be looking at? Any remedies to help soothe, cure this area? What kind of cardio could I do in the meanwhile so I don't completely lose all that fitness I worked so hard to gain?

All advice gratefully welcome and thanks in advance.

(blast it! and I was doing so well with my training program too: I could finally do Interval Max...sigh)

Sounds like a bad sprain but
Please, please, Please go check this out with your doctor. A while a go I actually sprained my ankle with a fall but thought I could take care of it myself. After two days I went to the doctor - she diagnosed a sprain - after x-ray and gave me a brace to wear - with the brace and good athletic shoes I could walk around and actually weight train till my foot healed. If I didn't go to her - I could have really caused more damage and broke the foot.

I have had much experience with broken toes, sprained, and broken ankles.

It is easy to have a bad sprain or break in your foot and not realize it -

But, before you go to doctor - remember basic first aid - ice the swelling for two days, then apply heat - then wrap it.

Let us know what the doctor said.

It could be an Achilles Tendon strain. Very painful and pesky. I agree you need to get to your doctor and take care to let it heal. I had achilles tendonitis when I first started running and it sidelined me big time because I didn't stop and let it heal when it first became a problem. Ice it and stay off it until the tenderness is completely gone! Good luck!

You have definitely injured your Achilles tendon--maybe something minor like a strain or maybe something more serious like a partial or a complete tear. What worries me is you say that it "bunches up" when you point your toe. If you have ruptured the gastrocnemius tendon, it will roll up like a window shade. You would still be able to point your toe because the soleus muscle underneath would do that for you. I would do Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation thing for at least 48 hours. Try to stay off the foot as much as possible. I would also call your doctor anyway. They may tell you to do the RICE procedure for the 48 hours and then to come in if there is no improvement. The sooner you get medical attention, the sooner you can get back to your workouts!
