Switching to All-DVD?

Hey, guys! Please give me your input:

I'm trying to decide whether it's worth it to switch out all of my Cathe videocassettes for their DVD counterparts. Currently I have:

I-Max
Rhythmic Step
Body Max
MIC
Circuit Max
Cardio Kicks
CTX (all 6)

The DVD's on which all of the above appear also contain other workouts that I'm not all that interested in right now (although you never know what the future holds!), and would cost a total of $235.96 not including s/h. I'm sure I could sell the vids fairly quickly and recoup some of that expense.

Anyone have an opinion as to whether their DVDs are preferable to the vid versions? Who among you has done this?

All opinions welcome!

I switched to DVD recently and I love it! I had quite a few Cathe tapes, but I sold them online with no problem. I also got a bonus at work, so I could afford to splurge on all the DVDs and a new DVD player from Costco.

I love being able to pick and choose segments and not having to rewind. I also like being able to fast forward at different speeds and having five disks loaded up at a time (I have a changer) so that I have 15 or so workouts to choose from with a click of the remote.

My only regret is that I didn't get a programmable DVD player, so I can't really create my own workouts automatically like some people do. I just have to go to the chapter list and pick out the part I wnat.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-22-02 AT 05:01PM (Est)[p]I definitely think it is worthwhile to have them on DVD, especially the CTX Series. This series is so much fun to mix and match the workouts. I also enjoy Cardio Kicks on DVD as I like to add on the punching drills at the end to other workouts. It looks like you only have Body Max from one particular DVD which is one of my favorite DVDs as I love Power Hour. If you don't care anything about mixing up the workouts, it may not be worth it for you, but I love them. My favorite right now is the Slow & Heavy Series. I didn't like it at first, but for some reason I'm now hooked on it.

I also have a 5-disc changer and there is a Cathe DVD in every section except for one right now. Mine is programable and it's really fun.

A-jock,
I switched to all dvd just after the Rhythmic Step/Power Hour/S&H came out, so I ended up with them in tape form and dvd form! I am very happy with my decision and I have started purchasing everything I'm interested in in DVD form (Christi, the new powerstrike and even replaced some yoga vids) Some people are unhappy with the sound - on some of the older ones I have to turn my tv volume up pretty loud - not a problem, just have to remember to turn it down before switching to tv...

But as far as your situation, I would have to ask you if you do the Cathe workouts you have just as they are (straight through the tape - doing the entire workout) or do you find yourself ff and rw and switching vhs's all the time?

If you go straight through, then there isn't much reason to switch (except not having to rewind)

If, however, you like to mix and match ctx, or say do 1/2 of Imax picking just some of the intervals, then DVD is the way to go. CTX is absolutely perfect for DVD for designing your own customized workout.

Hi, guys! Thanks for your input!

I think I've collected all the rationalizations :) I need; I'll probably make the quantum leap early next year. Joy, you brought up a good point: I'm a Cathe Mixer-And-Matcher, and rewinding and cueing workouts to certain points is a pain in the gazool. I checked the chaptering on each of the DVDs, and it's exactly what I want.

Of course, now I'll also have to try to convince DH to get a multi-head DVD player! I'm so-o-o-o 20th century!

One of the beauties of being me (aside from my outstanding good looks) is the fact that my employer allows employees to use the cash value of their accrued sick leave hours to reimburse themselves for fitness-related expenses, including workout DVD's. And I teach an aqua class for pay twice a week. It doesn't get much better than that, when trying to justify expenses (especially when you're buying workouts you already own in another format!).

Thanks again for your input!

done it done it done it.
worth it worth it worth it.

I get SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
much more use out of the DVD's (of course, disclaimer - I didn't go 'all-out Cathe' until I got the DVD's. The VHS tapes would stare me down from the top shelf and intimidate me, and barely got used).

They are so well chaptered, and often have little extras, such as CTX upper body and All Abs on the CTX series. On the Classics Vol 1 DVD, you get the step sections all chaptered separately, as well as
'finished product' on some of the step sections, so you can go through a completed section to your heart's content. They are awesome. A very worthwhile investment IMHO.
There is always Ebay for your tapes.

Is this legal or possible

Can I slip a question in here. For all you high techies out there (that are also law abiding citizens) can you tell me if it is possible to tape my VHS tapes onto DVD and CAN THEY BE CHAPTERED while so doing so that one can create the same multifaceted workouts that you are speaking of in the above posts. Can it be done and is it legal? If so wouldn't this be an alternative to selling our VHS's and rebuying the workouts on DVD? Thanks for your anticipated help :) :) :)

RE: Is this legal or possible

Briee -

As far as I know, you can copy VHS to CD with a home machine, but not DVD. DVD consists of complex layers (or something) and is not available (legally) for the home market.

I think the CD burners are several hundred dollars. And, CDs cannot be chaptered. It's just like having a VHS, but on a disc.

RE: Is this legal or possible

Thank you so much for filling me in on this, I've been wondering this for some time now. (My husband is sitting behind me saying "Just wait, the technology is changing so fast, you might be able to do this next week.")

But alas for now I too am faced with the prospect of "making the big switch". What we wouldn't do for a Cathe workout!! (and never regret it!!)

Ah, but wait......

I mentioned this in a thread a while back....the last time I was in Circuit City, they did indeed have a special DVD player that could also be used to convert VHS's to DVD's. The cost?? $1,000.00!! :)

LAST EDITED ON Nov-23-02 AT 11:02PM (Est)[p]I'm another big fan of the DVD format and Cathe DVDs. Actually, I became a huge Cathe fan because of her DVDs. Many of her workouts I had on VHS, but I get so much more use out of them in the DVD format (because of the flexibility.) After I made the DVD transition, I became completely absorbed by Cathe and her great workouts. Now I'm spoiled, which has made me reluctant to stray from the Cathe fold :).

You're already a huge Cathe fan, so you'll probably just worship her even more. I know, you didn't think that was possible ;-).
