survey of opinions about workout videos and instructors

Hey All,

So I have a general question that I want everyone's opinion on. Like everyone on this site I LOVE to sweat like crazy when I work out. What I love even more is seeing the instructor and her crew panting, muscles quivering, totally drenched in sweat like I am. It is the most empowering feeling in the world and I like to see the instructor and her crew on the video enduring the same experience as I am. What frustrates me is how good and coiffed everyone looks on these videos (including Cathe and crew on hers). It is just not reality. So here is a general question for all of you: Which instructors and their specific videos/DVD's resemble the true reality of a sweaty, dripping, hair wet, clothes soaked, unedited, workout experience where you see the sweat droplets fly and the instructors and crew dripping wet like Jennifer Beals in the famous Flashdance scene. For me, I think Cathe and her crew are at their "sweatiest" in Kick Max. I also like Amy Bento's video Hi/Lo Knockout. She and her crew look soaking wet in the workout. What other Cathe and Amy Bento workouts do you think resembe this experience and what other instructors and video/DVD's do you all like that show this true workout experience?

Happy Sweating!

I think Amy Bento usually looks sweaty...which I love...I get the impression that she doesn't stop filming between sections, or at least not for long:
In the Ring, she's quite sweaty
Kickbox Xtreme, she gets very sweaty,
Kickbox Surge she's very sweaty,
You can't see it so much, but in Advanced Step Challenge 3, she says 'sweats a flyin'' and it's no surprise!

I agree with you, that it's motivating when they'r just as sweaty as you. In the insanity workouts, they sweat A LOT.

However, I like it that Cathe's so polished.. she's godly in that respect ;)

You'll see Cathe's muscles quivering in Bodymax 2. At least in the bicep portion on the ball. As far as dripping sweat, I imagine they must take breaks to "clean" up, because I don't see how you could do her workouts and not sweat.

I agree with Insanity. Shaun T and everyone in EVERY workout he does sweats like none I've seen. Patrick Goudeau and his girls are very sweaty as well in his Hard Work Conditioning workouts, especially Hard Work Conditioning 2.

I'm with you, though. I love to sweat and as long as I'm working hard I don't mind too much if my instructors don't look worn out. All you have to do is look at their physique and it's pretty clear they all work hard.

Sweat in Filming

A little behind the scenes story on why Cathe and the crew looked so sweaty in Kick Max and for that matter in all of the Hardcore workouts. The Hardcore series were the first workouts to be filmed in our new Studio. We had some problems with the Thermostat for the A/C and had to have it replaced just before filming started. What we didn't know was the thermostat that was installed was not compatible with our A/C and instead blowing nice cool air it actually was blowing out hot air during the filming of the workouts. Filming studios are always hot because of all of the studio lights and we didn't realize that the A/C wasn't working until it was too late. Temperatures on the set reached 130 degrees and Cathe and the crew were drenched from head to toe. Buckets of water were literally pouring off of them.

When you watch the Hardcore series you will see a little more sweat than normal, but nothing like what really happened during the filming in 130 degree temperatures.

Video cameras offer a perception of reality that is not totally accurate. For instance, sweat will not show on some colors while it will on others. There are times when Cathe and the crew are completely drenched, but when you watch the video it may seem as if they haven't even broken a sweat. With over 100,000 watts of lights, temperatures vary from very warm to incredibly hot on every production we do and sweat always happens.

When we film we try to film as much as we can without stopping, but there are technical as well as quality reasons that limit how much you can film without stopping. This is why it takes an entire day of filming or longer just to make a good 30 second commercial. You just can't film quickly and produce the same quality video as when you spend more time.

Is the the temperature true for any workout video made regardless of instructor? That they are filming in 100+ degree temperatures and are dripping wet the whole time?

 I find Cathe's workouts hard under normal conditions! I can't imagine having to do them under hot lights with the A/C blowing hot air! And on top of that they have to smile the whole time and look like they are having fun. Cathe and her crew are amazing!

I can definitely understand why it can take a while to filme one of these workouts and cosmetically it makes sense to wipe down during the breaks. I live in Florida so I know what it is like to workout in heat like that. You are dripping from head to toe. I do an outdoor bookcamp workout at least once a week and when we are doing pushups and other work on the ground, there is literally a puddle of sweat on the ground. I have seen part of the Shaun T insanity workouts and gosh do they sweat on those. I can literally see the droplets of sweat dripping onto the floor and drops of sweat flying everywhere. I am sure in 130 degree heat the same thing happens in when Cathe and others film, I just wish Cathe, Amy Bento and others would film similar to Shaun T in that regard. In this day in age, I don't think there is any shame in doing it. I think people will enjoy it more and it will seem more real to them. Remember, our mother's "glowed," we SWEAT!
