Does anyone have any great recommendations for food suppliments/Vitamins for keeping up strength and endurance for those of us who exercise and strength train on a regular basis? Name brands, etc. would be much appreciated. Please only recommend that which you've used and noticed dramatic improvement and energy. I'm especially interested in what Cathe uses, if any... but want to hear anyone elses good experiences too. Thanks!

A few Recommendations

1. green tea extract scavenges hydrogen peroxide and other free radicals such as superoxide anion radicals--potent antioxidant.

2. natural vitamin E works to prevent formation of free radicals (peroxides).

3. glutathione destroys free radicals already present. Take gluthathione in combination with L-cystiene (ususlly sold as a unit) on an empty stomach.

These plus a regular multi-vitamin including all your "B's" has kept me even eith Interval max at age 48.

What helps me

I find it very valuable to consume a high-nutrient/high-protein snack within 30 minutes of finishing any intense workout, especially strength-training. I eat a heaping tablespoon of brewer's yeast (Lewis Labs tastes best to me) mixed with juice to the consistency of oatmeal, or a teaspoon of spirulina in a small glass of soymilk. These are like protein shakes without the expense of getting the prefab mixes, but any protein shake would work. I also take multi-vitamins and calcium/magnesium, extra E, extra iron, C and occasional selenium.

where to get it

yes, GNC or any good health food store will have these supplements. As for an after workout pick me up, rather than protein this is one of the best (and only) times when a high glycemic food such as raisins, pineapple, bananas, or even candy is ok to restore the glycogen stores quickly. Don't eat alot of high insulin carbs before you work out; you'll find you run out of steam in the middle.

re: protein mixes

I recently bought soy protein mix that is unflavored. I tried the flavored ones and couldn't get them down. I mix it in 12oz of diet iced tea. The problem is that the protein doesn't disolve all the way. Any advice?

Protein Mixes

Hi Cindy! Try looking in Gary Null's new book on nutrition. He has great ideas for shakes using the protein powders. They're so delicious! I love all of them. Also try finding the first issue of Muscle & Fitness for Women. They too had great shakes. It goes down a lot easier when you know what to mix. Regards, Kathy
