Super Size Me

Anyone see this movie? Wow I was blow away and very happy I do not eat fast food the closest I get is Subway or a Bean Burrito at Taco Bell}( . The man's lab work was really eye opening though, I really suggest a watch if you haven't seen it, a word of caution do not be eating :) . It's the Bowling for Columbine of American Obesity.

Can you believe that one measly little (delicious!) Taco Bell bean burrito has 370 calories and 10 grams of fat???? I can make a bean burrito at home for about 150 calories and 1-2 grams of fat. I haven't seen the movie but I gave up most fast foods several years ago and was able to lose a few pounds without even trying!

You just had to go and tell me how many cal and fat were in that ;-) . :7 Mexican food is my weakness and yes I can make it far more healthy at home, I also make a mean good for you black bean green chili chili :9. Now I'm getting hungry!

Rebecca11 -- Would you consider sharing your recipe for that black bean green chili chili? I LOVE Mexican food and that sounds so yummy!

Yes, Marla, I second that request to Rebecca. I also love Mexican food and I try a lot of different recipes. I have never heard of using green chilis in a black bean chili recipe, but it sounds great. It would be very much appreciated.

Oh My Gosh! I did see this movie-what an eye opener! Not that I eat fast food all the time... I thought it was funny and gross. My DH always tease each other that we are going to hang out and watch TV with a "quart of coke":) I recommend the movie.

I thought the movie/documentary was fabulous and that it should be required viewing as part of general eduation from 8th grade upwards.

Fast food does kill. Proof.

We sat the whole family down and MADE them watch this. Now when we drive past McDonald's the kids all duck because I turn around to punch them all.:7 :7 (kind of has become a joke in our family - you have to see the movie to understand this one). Children need to LEARN to make WISE choices parents. It's also helpful if they know how to block a good punch }( }( (that was a joke).

Okay guys-chili

Ingredients:

1 lbs black beans presoaked (I usually quick soak)
1 16 oz can of diced tomatoes low sodium
2 cans chopped green chili’s
1 medium onion
chopped scallions
1 medium tomato
1 large green pepper
Choice of chili powder (I like Emeril's, it has one of the lowest sodium contents)
1 medium avocado

Meat-I don't eat any red meat, chicken or turkey so I omit though occasionally I will use the crumbles by morning star but really it tastes just great without, you should add what you like browned first.

After soaking make sure you rinse the beans it gets rid of all that nasty gas. Add 6-7 cups of water, bring beans to a low boil for about a half hour to 45 minutes then simmer.

Now I don’t really measure out how much chili powder I use, I use to taste. I typically add about 2 tsp when I start to cook the beans and add more later. After simmering the beans for 1 ½ to 2 hours I add the canned tomatoes and canned green Chili’s, I also add a little more chili powder now. After the beans are starting to soften usually around the 3-4 the forth hour I will add my chopped onion and green pepper and a little more chili powder.

The trick to this chili is the slow cooking, it brings out all the flavors, I typically have my beans soaked and begin cooking them around 8-9 am and the chili is done at 5-6 pm. Your variations are the meat, the water, thicker or not, I like my thick, and how much chili powder. When I serve it I top it with chopped avocado and tomato’s, scallions and a warmed whole wheat tortilla and a romaine salad. Hope I explained so that you guys can understand !
:) ;-)

RE: Okay guys-chili

This recipe sounds wonderful. What is the reason to "soak the black beans"? I don't understand why you need to do that. Also, about how long do you soak them for? Thanks for the recipe.

You need to soak them otherwise cook time could be really long and sometimes they never soften up and also then you can rinse them and get rid of that nasty gas cause stuff :). It's my understanding we don't lose a lot of nutrients doing this, at least that's what an RD told me. I usually quick soak, you boil them for 2-3 minutes and then let them stand for about an hour, rinse then start cooking

I had my 9 year old watch it. He hasn't wanted McD's or Taco Bell since. Has started to limit his Ben and Jerry's to just a couple times a week. And now has decided that the school food is totally unhealthy and wants water instead of milk with him meal.
