Suggestions for Barbell

I got mine at Dick's Sporting Goods for about $50, it is 110 pounds weight set. Comes with a 5ft barbell, 2 dumbbells and 85 pounds of weight. I am enjoying it immensely. I did have to return the barbell for them to find one that the clips fit on but other than that I have had no problems. Others here will recommend the Troy Lite system where the bar itself only weighs 5 pounds where the bar I have weighs 15 pounds.:) It is all in what you are looking for, how much money you want to spend and how much weight you want to be able to lift.

Happy Hunting for a barbell!!:7

Hi, Diane--

There has been a ton of talk here about the Troy Lite barbell. I just got one, and I love it! I had been using a Firm barbell that is padded. The padding was nice for leg work when I had the bar on my shoulders (and I still use it for that), but for stuff that you hold the bar in your hands for, the padding was awkward and actually caused my hands/forearms to hurt.

The Troy Lite bar by itself only weighs 5 lbs., and the starter set of plates that came with it allows you to go up to 40 lbs. (I think...). I got mine after reading all the positive things that were said here on the forums. I believe Cathe uses this barbell in several of her workouts.

I will say the only thing I don't like about the Troy Lite is the spring clips (or whatever they're called) that you use to hold the plates on. I found them almost impossible to get on and off the bar, so I just use the ones that came with my Firm barbell.

I bought mine through Fitness1st. Here's a link http://www.fitness1st.com/bars-weight-systems.html

Good luck and let us know what you decide to get!:)

Diane,

I've been using a 15 lb. barbell for about a year and was having upper back pain. Because of the great recommendations here regarding the Troy-Lite I ordered it. I received it last week and absolutely LOVE IT! So much easier to handle and NO back pain! I would definitely recommend it. I ordered it from fitness1st.

I would definitely recommend the Troy Lite. I also had previously used the Firm barbell, and could lift no more than 40 lbs over my head. I actually got 50 over my head with the Troy Lite! Also, fitness1st.com is great. I got my set very quickly after I ordered it. In regard to the comment about the clips, I also have trouble with them occasionally, but usually just have to get a better grip on them.

I just think of this as an opportunity to improve my grip strength (which it has!).
