Sugar in Protein bars

Hi everyone

Does anyone know if it's true that sugar helps digest protein? It's really hard to find a protein bar that has low in sugar but high in protein. The only bar I found was from Everlast, which had 30g of protein and 0 sugar and sugar alcohol. But for some reason, it's been discontinued---gosh, you know how worried I was when I found out about it? Could it be that there was some sort of germ or harmful chemical in it????x( ---Then when I talked to my hubby, he said he heard it somewhere that sugar might help to digest protein, and that's why most protein bars have lots of sugars. I thought sugar is only to help the flavor of the bars...

What brand of protein bars and/ or protein shake do you have?

I was wondering this too. I had always heard that bars are just candy bars with protein added. I eat Zone bars for snacks, breakfast on the run, and before workout and there is a lot of sugar in them (13g). I would love to hear what people have to say.

My understanding is that it is always preferrable to eat food over protein bars, but they are nice in a pinch, I agree. I, too, think it's hard to find a bar that doesn't have a whole lot of sugar. I think the designer whey ones & detour bars aren't too horrible ;)

Have you looked at the Odyssey bars or the Detour/U-turn/One way bars?

I think they are lower in sugar.

I eat the EAS Advant Edge bars. They only have 1g of sugar. I tried to stop eating protein bars because they are pretty much "glorified candy bars", but I've started eating them again because they are my one "treat" that I allow myself. It helps me not pig out on cookies and cake.:9 It has not been detrimental to my progress at all and I eat one every day.

I've had the Advant bars as well. They are good, and keep me full when I need to be! I still prefer my protein shake - only because I add 2 servings of fruit (I have a hard time eating fruit for some reason) and it's still less calories that the bar.

There are others out there that are lower - try looking for the low carb ones.
