Suck in that gut!

I find that when I'm sitting or standing at work, I pretty much let my abs hang out and do their own thing. It's terrible for the posture and has a negative impact on the overall shape of the abdominal area. What's the point of doing crunches when you're just letting it all sag the rest of the day?

So I'm offering up a "Suck it in!" challenge for three weeks. Why three weeks? Because that seems to be the understood length of time it takes to form a habit. For the next three weeks, I'm going to make a point of paying attention to what my midsection is up to. When I notice it sagging, I'm going to tighten my abs and hold that for 10 seconds. After a few times, they should be pretty sore. }(

Anyone else up for a core awareness type of challenge?

I think a check-in every day is the way to go. If you're on the Cathe website at some point during the day, just seeing the check-in might make you say "Crap, it was hanging out again!"

Glad to see there's some interest!

ETA: If we start on Saturday, that will take it up to July 15th. Does anyone prefer a different start/end day?

LOL!!! As soon as I read the title of the post I sucked in my abs! I'm guilty of the same thing.

While we are at it...shoulders back and sit/stand up straight!

My chiropractor will be so happy!

Count me in, too!! Our instructor in aerobics class always yelled at us to suck in those abs during ab work. And we used to say to one another...these our our abs sucked in...haha

Great idea!! I'm sucking right now..

:)

Well, count me in. I sit a lot at work & I am so guilty of rounding the shoulders & relaxing the pooch.

COUNT ME IN!!! I need to do this and have been trying to do it more. I think my uterus is about to burst from my tight grip as we speak!

FYI, Monica Brant-Beckham recommends this...

Sucking in your gut is a great way to tone your transverse abdominus muscle which runs across your stomach, perpendicular to the rectus abdominus, which is challenged by virtually all ab work (excluding obliques). It's primary function is to provide a foundation of support to your core. Pretty much the only way to exercise it is to suck it in!! Keep doing it and you will see results that you will like. When I took my PT exam, I called the transverse abdominus the "suck that gut in" muscle to remember its function.

Bonus - no equipment needed and you can do it anywhere!!

haha... this thread made me laugh. For the first 10 years of my life, I heard the phrase "suck and tuck!" from my mom DAILY. (suck in your tummy and tuck in your butt). Oh man... I HATED it at the time, but I'm glad it stuck with me! I've actually have people compliment my posture on a pretty regular basis, THANKS MOM!

So I'm here to support you ladies... Suck and tuck girls!

haha... good luck! :+

Great idea. What I need, though, is a little bell or something to remind me to do this at work (can't go on Cathe.com at work). I start out the day thinking about sucking in my gut and not rounding my shoulders (my other big problem), and then it gets really busy or I get tired, and before I know it I'm sitting all hunched up in front of the comp. :(

Bunbun, Try posting a little reminder to your computer. If your in an area that many may see it, disguise it. Like, instead of a post-it note that says "Suck In That Gut", put one up that says "SITG" and only you will know what it means.
