STS January Check In - Welcome All!

Today I wanted a good calorie burn quickly. I did X10 the total workouts, 81 minutes, 689 calories, Then I did the abs from Lean legs and abs, 10 minute 48 calories. Total time was 91 minutes, calories burned 737.

Crazy Soccer Mom, nice work on making the goal weight.

Lisa, I have two dogs. We have a mutt that is part lab and supposedly great pyranees (according to the people we purchased her from) that is brindle with the floppy lab ears and short hair. She is almost 8 years old now. Such a wonderful dog. After my daughter just lost her golden retriever that her family got after our dog Mudd, we kind of thought were thinking about getting another dog. Our pup Gertie was not a planned doggie though. My husband works in a local city and someone found her roaming around at 4 months. They put up fliers and tried to find an owner. No one contacted her so he brought her home. Somehow she just worked her way into our hearts. She is a black lab. The only thing that I can think is she was right at that chewing, peeing stage. I took her and had all of her immunizations done. Soon to be spayed :) She is very active and a pretty dominant dog personality though. Quite a bit of work but training is going well. As for Mudd we had a Dane named Puddle at the time. The grandchildren helped name our doggies.
I have done 3 days of a weight rotation all in a row and taken the yoga and ab work with me when leaving town. I don't work right now though. It does work and you look like you have a good plan.

Justine, I love Sharon Twombly's workouts. I think if you look at credits on a lot of workouts, even Cathe's, that you will see Greg Twombly on the credits. She is his wife. Generally she would be under the CIA workouts. That is Creative Instructors Workouts. One of my favorites of hers is Athletic Step Jam. It even has a stability ball workout on it that is quite good. Zero to Sixty is a low impact workout that uses light weights throughout the whole workout. Max weight is 5lbs. I have quite a collection of workouts and favorite instructors :)
It is nice to have something to push us toward a goal :) Mine usually ends up being a vacation. Sometimes just for self. As I age it is to improve always :) Being in the wedding would sure be a goal.

Back to lifting today with STS Disc 13 (the replacement arrived yesterday, so I did it today instead of repeating #16, partly because I had an unused workout printed out ready to go.)

Oddly enough, my chest was weaker than last week's workout. I couldn't make it thru chest press with 30 lb db's for 12 reps, and also had to decrease weights for other exercises. Wonder if it is due to where I am at in my cycle right now.

Any of you experienced this before? It was still a good workout, as I worked to failure/bad form .. but just without as much weight as previously.

Crazysoccermom - I experience exactly the same thing with weights - my strength seems to come and go in cycles - I haven't related it to ToTM, but I'm going to make a note from now on, and see if that's the cause. Well done on making the weight goal, btw. Great news.

Diane, Lisa, your dogs sound adorable. I so miss the puppy stage - but I'm only prepared to house-train during the Summer, so I'll have to wait! How sad that there are so many strays. All our dogs have been rescue dogs (some found us :p ). A year ago we had 4 - an Irish (red) Setter, Coonhound, Lurcher and German wirehaired Pointer. Just before Christmas the Setter and Coonhound were stolen. It happens quite a bit here. The Lurcher then took to wandering (in search of his buddies??) and got knocked over by a truck, so we lost 3 in a matter of weeks. By March last year I was brave enough to get another - a lurcher again. So now we have 2. Wellie, the Pointer (about 12 years old) and MiMi a lurcher - about 2-3 years. I will get another.......

Yesterday I was going to do another workout after High Step Challenge. BUT, my friend who is getting married came round with champagne. You can guess the rest. (We ended up playing poker at midnight).

Haven't felt my best today (!) but walked the dogs, did disc 5 (back and tris) and then the cardio bit of Hard Strikes + 1 tabata. Not bad, considering...

Lisa, I'm impressed with your organisation for travelling and working out. Many would have used it as an excuse to miss a few sessions.

Diane - I thought I recognised the name Twombly. I'll check it out. Thanks

Justine

Today I started with X Train All Out Low Impact Hiit Floor cardio premix, 22 minutes, 139 calories. I then did STS disc 20 legs, 49 minutes, 329. finished with extended stretch. Total time was 86 minutes 513 calories.

Crazy Soccer Mom, I have the same thing happen with workouts and it is not because of the cycle because I had a hysterectomy for cancer when my youngest was 2 years old. She is now 34. I think a lot depends how much rest you have had and what you have eaten. I think we all have those days where we are way more energetic and seem to be able to blast through anything and then the days where it just doesn't go that way. I am sure your workout was still effective and results will still come.

Justine, that is so sad about your dogs. It is terrible that someone would steal them. I would guess so that they can make some money. Mudd is an old mutt and doubt anyone would take her. My dogs stay in the house most of the time and are inside when we are gone. It is really hard to understand why people get dogs and then just dump them.
It sounds like you had a nice time with your friend and you still came off with a good workout :)

Diane - I did All Out LI HiiT as well! I then did first 4 combos from PRS#1 - I'm getting there (but scared of no 5!!). When I've 'mastered' this I'm going to break down Amy Bento's kickbox in the same way - on your sensible recommendation.

That was it for me today. Nothing to be proud of, but OK.

Justine

This morning I pulled out Amy Bento Ross Body Box. I have only done the first combo and a bit of the first interval a couple of times. Today I did combos and intervals 1-3 and the stretch. By the end of the combos I was getting the moves pretty well. I have been afraid of this with the knee and modified on the first interval with the jumping. It was really not as bad as I thought it might be for the knee but, then again it is healing up nicely. I really like intervals 2 & 3. 4 looked good but I haven't done it. This was 62 minutes, 436 calories. I then got on tread climber intending to do 20 minutes but since I was listening to a pod cast that was 30 minutes I went 32 minutes. Calories burned 309. I finished off with Rapid Fire 4 core and stretch, 16 minutes, 75 calories. Total time was 150 minutes, 820 calories.

Justine, nice work :) It really does help to work through some choreography a bit at a time. I think it helps keep from getting frustrated with a long learning process. I had the one combo on PRS1 that I stumbled through. I need to tackle Amy's Advance Step Challenge 5. I have done the first two combos and that is it.

Yesterday I was tired, sore, cranky, PMSing, and chest was sore from STS the day before. So I skipped cardio day and let myself wallow in pity.

Today I shook off the cobwebs and did Legs Disc 17. Feel better. I used the lifting hooks today, and that was much better. The 40 lb deadlifts I could actually concentrate on my legs, instead of my slipping grip. Much better. A bit awkward, though.

Crazysoccermom- sometimes we just need to give ourselves a break and then start afresh the next day. The lifting hooks sound good - would they work for the front squats in Meso#3? I can never keep hold of the bar for those.

Diane - I've now made it through all of PRS#1. Thanks for the encouragement! I do have to miss a few of the turns, though - I get dizzy.

I walked the dogs and did disc 6 today, the PRS#1. The leg workout had me winded - one of the more aerobic ones.

I'm tempted to do a Jillian Michaels tomorrow- either No More Trouble Zones or Burn Fat Boost Metabolism. I haven't done either of those for a long time. We'll see.

Hope everyone has a great Valentine's day! (We don't celebrate - prices go up, quality goes down around here - but we'll go out tomorrow night instead - a Greek Taverna - lots of meze :p)

Justine

OK, so I did the JM BFBM. A first I started thinking that I'd remembered it wrong - it seemed so easy - then it jumped a notch!. If you don't know it, it's 7 6minute circuits. Each are loosely themed. It starts with an easy kick-boxing inspired one, but soon ramps it up to plyo etc. I like that the core circuit is in the middle - often by the end of a workout I'm too tired to switch on my core. My HR went up over 170!! I don't often achieve that (tabatacise is about the only Cathe one that does it for me). Jillian is not as obnoxious in this one as she can be sometimes.
I'd walked the dogs 5 miles in the howling wind, and then I did combo #6 from PRS1, and the finished product. I'd burned over 1200 calories by the time I'd finished, with my HR spread between middle and upper zone fairly evenly.
Pretty chuffed with myself today - I've earned my meze!!!

I guess I missed Friday's check in. I did STS week 3 back and biceps followed by Ab Circuits med ball abs (no partner) and ending with the abs and stretch from STS Total body. I don't have my notes handy for the specifics but I know it was over 500 calories. My Dad came to visit from Nebraska and my children and grandchildren all made the two hour trek here. 19 people in all :D I was busy with lots f cooking. Eating was not so wonderful either. Back on track tomorrow. I had two days off so am ready for tomorrow. Today is putting the house back in order.

Justine, I am glad you got through PRS 1 :) I have had a lot of spins and turns make me dizzy before too. I think it is a fun workout. I don't think I have that Jillian Michael's workout. I have quite a few though. I may be wrong because most of them I have not done more than 2 or 3 times and keep telling myself to quit buying them. She can be a bit annoying at times. I have several Bob Harper workouts as well. I have done his more than Jillian's.
I have tried different ways of getting a bit heavier with the front squats. I tried them with the Bowlex but it was awkward. Most of the time I just do it with the weight vest and bar or sometimes I have tried dumbbells resting them just on and in front of my shoulders resting the ends in the palms of my hands.

Crazy Soccer Mom, I would think that the versa grips would just take some getting used to.

I sort of got sidetracked midweek with travel. I took a DVD with me, but the hotel room was so small. So I didn't get any yoga done on Wed. Traveled home on Thursday, in the snow. By the time I got home, I didn't feel like exercising, rather I had some wine. Did UY Crosstrain on Friday. Yesterday was Disc 18.

Yesterday my friend and I cooked dinner for our husbands, so indulged in more food and wine than I should have. I feel like I'm getting back on track today. Went for a walk with hubby and pup, then came home and did UY Vitality. Halfway through STS and feeling stronger!!

Have a great week everyone!
Lisa

Today I did STS disc 22 chest, shoulders, and triceps, 44 minutes, 234 calories. I then did Party Rockin Step #1 premix timesaver #2 (1&2 mix) 31 minutes 206 calories. I finished with the Tread Climber, 20 minutes, 201 calories, HR Avg 141/max151. Total time 95 minutes, calories burned 641.

Weekend catch up:

Sat: Nothing. was going to try for a cardio, but between errands, shuffling kiddos various places, time ran out.

Sun: went for an am run with hubby. :) It was nice having someone run with me, even though we pace differently. Total wasw 4.13 miles with warm up and cool down, but ran for about 3.3-3.5 of it. Pushed the pace a bit (miles two and three were at 12:30 or so pace.) Paid for it with a headache. After lunch and costco, I went down for a nap which helped it go away.

Mon: STS# 18 - Back and Biceps. Really felt the lower back on those one legged deadlifts. Biceps were fried at the end of the biceps work, too.

Now I need a nap!

Everyone sounds kind of meh. I certainly am.Today it was STS disc 7 - chest, shoulders and bis. The one with ALL THOSE PUSH UPS. Elmos. Huh.
I've decided my core gives out first in the push ups. All the more reason to keep at 'em, right?
I was going to follow up with Amy Bento's kick box - in an attempt to learn some of the combos. The dvd wouldn't play  so I did Premix timesaver #1 of Rockout Knockout. Fried my shoulders! I'm not so sure what it is about that workout, though - it doesn't seem as much fun as some of Cathe's other kick boxing ones.

I'm off now to try Amy Bento, again (it's almost 6pm here). If I can't get it to work, I'll try something else (like reading a book????)

Justine

Definitely Meh!, for me.

Woke up with a migraine. Decided to get out of bed late and take some excedrin, and if it worked, then get 30 mins of HiiT in. But then the nausea kicked in.

Ugh. Headache better, still in the background, but liveable. Brought my stuff to work just in case I have time, but it's my busy lab day.

Hope everyone else's day is better than mine!

Today I did Amy Bento Ross Body Box entire workout. 72 minutes439 calories. I then did Cardio Core Circuit functional core mix, 7 minutes, 37 calories and Les Mills Combat Core Attack using a 20# dumbbell when a dumbbell was used, 17 minutes, 87 calories. I finished with Zuzka Z Cut Power Yoga Series, Crescent series, warrior endurance series, balance and plyo series, and cool down, 26 minutes, 134 calories. Total time was 2 hours and 2 minutes, and calories 797. I don't generally hit 2 hours with my workouts anymore. But after I got started I decided to do all of Body Box since I had not done the last combo, interval. I also had not done the plyo series in the yoga yet. The plyo was not much more than the jump lunge switches and stuff in some of the rest of it. I still have not done the upper plyo series in this yet. The handstands sort of worried me :)

Crazy Soccer Mom I sure hope the migraine clears up for you. I used to have them all of the time. I am unsure what happened. I have Imitrex here that I have not used in 3 years.

Justine, I have had workouts that were particular about the dvd player they were played in. I remember a couple that I had it worked just to push the back skip button and play. I have a dog training dvd right now that will play in one dvd player(we have several) and one laptop. It will not play in either of the two tv/dvd combos that we have. I hope that you can get it to work.

I hope everyone is shaking off that 'bleh' feeling and getting back on track. I used to take Imitrex also but haven't had to in a few years. I attribute it to changing jobs. I keep Advil Migraine on hand and if I feel a headache coming on, take 1 and that will normally clear it up. I think exercising really does help relieve stress as well.

I did disc 19 yesterday and lifted all the weights as planned. Today I did Pedal Power and UY Hardcore. Should have done some shovel max, but thankfully my husband has taken care of that. Perhaps some nicer weather toward the end of the week. I'm in PA and it has possibly snowed everyday in February thus far. At least it seems that way. On a positive note, was light until after 6:00 PM!!

Tomorrow is weigh in day. I expect to hold from where I was last week. V-Day and all!

Lisa

Had the migraine all day. Finally cleared up in the evening.

Back to it today - and need to get in some cardio at lunch for sure.

Chest Shoulder and Triceps - Disc 19. So excited to be in Meso 2, week 3! Half way done! I'm loving STS so far. Well - I may not be able to move my arms/chest tomorrow, though. Fried is an understatement. Even typing is exhausting! lol

Crazysoccermom- so sorry to hear about the migraine. Luckily not something I've ever had to endure, but I've heard how debilitating they can be. Don't overdo it, eh? That fried feeling in the chest is great, isn't it? My 'favourite' DOMS!!!

I finally got my Amy Bento dvd to work - Diane, you're right, it works on some players and not others. I did half an hour (combos 1 and 2) and then Travis Elliot short and sweet. Then yesterday I did Jillian Michaels 'No more trouble zones'. I'd forgotten that it was more endurance than cardio (I'd remembered it as sort of MWT). Anyway, there was so much plank work and shoulder work, and my DOMS were out in force, that I didn't exactly shine. I DID use 4kg (8.8lb) rather than the measly 3lb recommended, though.

Last night I was on call as a First Respoonder, and I got a call out, so didn't do an evening workout.

Today I did STS disc8 (tris and back) after my dog walk - I really went for it! Then I did Imax 3 just 1-5. It really burned my calves.

Am wondering whether to do anything this evening. I worry that I'm doing too much???

Talking of which - 2 hours is great, Diane - I'm trying to push my endurance a bit (I used to be spent after 40 minutes!!)

Lisa - best of luck with the weigh in..

Justine x

Had to rush this morning - so walked the dogs and went straight into HiiT40/20. This evening I did circuit blast - which I love because it's not too difficult or repetitive!
Hope everyone is well,
Justine
