STS and Stability Balls

Hi, I am new to Cathe and to the forum. I found Cathe through Tom Venuto’s forum. Thank you to all of you who have posted there which lead me here. I have been looking for a weight lifting (dvd) program for a long time. I ordered STS, it should arrive early in the week; in the meantime I am assembling my equipment, and looking at the 1RM tests on the workout manager. I do have a simple question though,. I have inherited two stability balls, one green at 65cm and one blue at 75cm. I am 5’4” weigh 118#’s, are the blue and green balls too big? Would the pink ball work (at 55cm) work best for me? I haven’t used stability balls in any of my workouts, so I am not sure what the advantages or limitations are of the various sizes. Thanks for any input you can give. I plan on start Meso1 Disc 1 on 4/18 if anyone would like to join me! :DJanis

Hi Janis and WELCOME! :D

We're very similar; I'm 5'4" also and weigh about 111. I have a 55 and a 65. I use my 65 the most. I believe we are on the line for which way to go; I think they suggest 5'4" and under for the 55 and like 5'4" to 5'10" the 65, then the 75. For me the 55 just feels too small, but I do use it once in a while. You will have to play with it a little to see what feels comfortable for you. I do think you'll find the 75 too big and awkward to work with. Anyway, my suggestion is to start with the 65 and see how that works for you.

Thank you! that helps a lot. Wow 111#, I bet you look great. My short term goal is to lose 4 more pounds, I have already lost 5 pounds....which I put on after being bucked off a horse in early December and being laid up with a concussion:(. My long term goal is to lose another 2 after that...why long term? well, my body likes to hold on to all the fat that it can - so realistically I know that the last two will take some time. Thanks again. Janis

When I bought my ball years ago, the general guideline at the time was to sit on the inflated ball. If your knees are bent at to 90 degrees (right angle), then you've found the right size. This means that your hips and knees are on the same level. If your hips are below your knees (hence the knee angle is small than 90 degrees), then the ball is too small. If the hips are higher than the knees (knee angle larger than 90 degrees), then the ball is too big. Of course, the level to which you've inflated the ball will also influence this, so make sure you have the ball at the right inflation level before you do the seated measurement.

HTH,
Sandra

Thank you Fiddlefit, that does help a lot. As you can probably imagine I bounced right off of the blue ball - it isdefinitely over inflated AND too large.
The ds's had a fun time making me their dodge ball target though! lol!:D
