strengthen hips

Hi Cathe,

I have had hip pain ever since I had kids. Something about being pregnant really threw them out of alignment and they've never been the same. Is there any excersizes to help strengthen that area? It feels really good doing the leg conditioning part of Kick Max, so am I on the right track?

Thanks,

Sally

I know you are addressing Cathe but I wanted to give you a tip since I have noticed some hip issues myself. If I ease up on my lower body work, my hips seem to weaken fast and I start having IT Band problems and it hurts when I run. The strength move that seems to be doing wonders FOR ME are the leg presses!!! If I focus on my form, drive through the heal and use my hip more, I can really feel it (in a great way). My IT Band is feeling significantly better this week after doing Muscle Endurance 2x this week. I am sure the squats and static lunges help but I am thinking the leg presses are catching the bulk.

I need to tell you, though...if you are out of alignment, it may be a good idea to consult an MD first! You may need a bit of physical therapy. You don't want to hurt yourself more!!! I know some just need a few sessions with a therapist and then they are able to do the work on their own. Regardless, don't do anything to worsen your situation and CERTAINLY do not do anything that causes pain. (Pain and feeling the burn are different)

You know your situation better than we do. If it is a matter of strengthening a muscle group, start slowly with low/no resistance.

Oh...another suggestion (this has helped me) is Power Yoga. I do Bryan Kest at home via DVD. It gets into my hips really good! Holding the poses helps with strength and he stretches everything out as well!

HTH!! Sorry you asked???:p

I'm not Cathe either, but I'd consult a chiropractor who specialzes in sports medicine and rehab. S/he would be able to figure out what the problem is, and do adjustments and/or give you exercises to do to correct the problem.

Hi,
I saw this post and had to put in my two cents worth! I have been told by several orthropedic doctors I need a hip replacement-all the bodybuilding and running over the past 10 years I guess caught up, and not in a good way!
I am only 40, so I explored other options and found a 'rolfer" , this is a trained professional that deals with what they term "structural alignment".
They work with your muscles, stretching the fascia that surrounds them and getting your body back into alignment.Chiropractors are great, but once you get adjusted, your muscles(because they are used to a holding pattern) can throw your body out of whack, leaving you no better than before. Believe me, I was a sceptic, but it seems to be working.
After two sessions, I stopped limping, and have noticed a huge difference in the way I feel. Maybe I can put off the surgery for another 10 years!
Just be sure the rolfer has been educated at a certified rolfing school, look for the name "Ida Rolf", she started the original school, and there is only two legitimate ones in the country.
Good luck to you! Oh, and I still do all of Cathe's videos, I just modify where I have to!:)
