strength training

Cathe,
I am a 48 y/o woman with a long history of aerobics experience and relatively little strength training. I am hoping to strengthen my joints and keep them flexible into old age. I was wondering what DVDs you would recommend for the relative beginner at strength/weight training to make sure I am engaging all muscle groups on a regular basis. You seem to have lots of DVDs for advanced levels. Can I just get those and start with small weights? Are there things in particular that I should remember? And how often should I be incorporating strength training into the week? At present, I do four days of cardio-aerobics, running, biking- and do some weights and core work two days a week.

I know this is a simple question and one you may have answered many times. If this is posted already somewhere, just let me know where I can look it up.

I totally enjoy your DVDs and deeply appreciate their blend of intricacy and challenge. I am deeply hooked on cardio work outs and your choreography is perfect and keeps me coming back for more. Other people don't always understand how important exercise is to me, but it is my life. It has helped me manage a multitude of feelings and life events. Thank you so much for the work you do.

i'm not cathe but i saw you had a lot of views and no responses so i wanted to give you my opinion. i hope you don't mind. my suggestion to you is to buy any of cathe's full body weight workouts (supersets/pushull, muscle endurance, muscle max, ect.) and start doing those with weights that will exhaust your muscles by the last rep. i cant' give you an exact poundage b/c everyone is different. just choose a weight that you can use good form during the exercise and is challenging to you. i would do this 3 times a week and intersperse your cardio on your non-weight training days. so it would look like this.
monday: weights
tuesday:cardio
wednesday: weights
thursday: cardio
friday: weights
saturday: cario
sunday: off
as you get stronger, start to increase your weights to keep challenging yourself. good luck
