Step Aerobics with bad knees

I had knee surgery for a torn ACL about 2 years ago. I really loved Cathe's step aerobics DVDs and continued to do them when my knee healed. But the pains are coming back again and I fear I can't do the tapes. I was using a 6" riser. Should I continue to do them? Can I continue to do the workouts and see a benefit with no riser at all?
My doctor says I should abandon step aerobics and just do walking and swimming or I will need a knee replacement soon.
I just love all the DVCs so any encouragement would be great.

I had some similar problems with my knees while running ( I had no surgery). I suggest lowering the step height to minimum and also strengthening your lower leg muscles by doing various exercises like side and front lunges, squats, lateral raises,...as long as you doc has no problem with that of course. If you like he cardio aspect, you could also try speed walking, very low impact and good cardio.
Hope this helps.

I'm actually going in for a scope next Wednesday. Is your doc an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine? Usually docs will recommend the course of action which is the most conservative and will guarantee zero injury. If your doc is a sports specialist, then he/she will understand your desire and need for physical activity beyond walking and swimming. This is why I'm going in for surgery because I have done PT to no avail and simply walking or swimming the rest of my life as my only exercise is absolutely unacceptable.

Definitely proceed with caution, but see a sports specialist first. They aren't simply for professional or collegiate athletes.
