Steel Cut Oats

Good morning everyone. I hope everyone had a good weekend. I just bought Bob's Mill Steel Cut Oats yesterday at the supermarket. I never bought before because I always heard it took forever to cut and that it should be cooked in a crockpot well I dont have a crockpot and I dont really have the time to spend making breakfast meals. Anyway I made it last night on the stove top following the directions and it went really well didnt take as long as I thought it would and it tasted better than I thought. I didnt add anything to it trying to keep it clean as possible. Can I make it with some milk instead of water?

Another thing you can do instead of doing them in the crockpot is to soak them in water overnight just like you would beans. That will speed up your morning cooking time. Also, make a large batch, keep extras in the refrigerator, and reheat in the microwave in subsequent mornings. I don't use milk myself but don't see why not. I do add dried fruit (cherries are particularly nice).

Hi Messyjess - I find that steel cut oats don't take that long to cook either, usually only about 10 minutes on the stove top. I cook them with water and add some milk/buttermilk in at the end and let in cook for another minute or two.

I've made them with milk. Usually, I do the crockpot thing, and add part milk and part water. This thread actually reminded me I needed to make some, so today I did 1 cup oats, 1 cup skim milk, 3 cups vanilla almond milk, a little extra water, 3 packs of truvia, 1/3 cup of craisins, and some chopped up orange peel, and 1 tsp vanilla. This combo is a first, hope it comes out ok.

I cook about enough for a week and refrigerate it.
I put some in a bowl with some raisins and microwave it for one minute.
I then add some walnuts and ground flax seed and sprinkle some cinnamon on top.
You can add milk if you want it.
