Starting back after about 5 months off

Do I start slowly, doing 3/4 days a week and then work up to 5 or do I just go for it but at lower intensity?

Injury was plantar fasciitis...a bad case. I worked out today with Body Fusion and can already tell that my injured foot is sensitive...not hurting exactly but giving me that, "Hey, you better watch it" feeling.

TIA

I think you have your answer, Sue. Go slowly and if an activity produces pain then don't do it. I think I'd be inclined to go at a lower intensity for now and just see how you feel. Our own bodies are a great indicator if we listen.

What treatment did you receive for you Plantars Fasciitis?? If your foot is still bothering you, you will want to keep the impact low. You should still be able to do strength training with no problem.

You definitely need to go for it...just need to listen to your body. If your foot is bothering you, you need to modify.

I'm not sure of all the circumstances of why you haven't worked out for 5 months, but try really hard to not let that happen again. As you can see, it's easy to get off track, but very hard to get back on track again.

I don't think that "telling off" is the right response to someone who has been forced to take a few months off from exercising. Most of us, to whom this happens, might already feel some degree of guilt and lowered self-esteem because of it. The "correctional" attitude does not help at all.

Sometimes absences from exercise happen for reasons beyond our control. Certainly severe plantar fascitis would be one of them. No-one is perfect. Let's just encourage eachother no matter how we proceed with our exercise routines.

Sue:

I'm in the same boat as you. What I plan to do is take it day by day. Trying to go straight back to a 5 or 6 day exercise week may be my ambition, but past experience has shown me that I cannot predict how sore or tired I will feel. Probably 4 sessions is a great start for the first couple of weeks. Work up to the cardio slowly, babying that foot. When you feel you have pushed far enough, then swap to strength training and continue to make improvements there instead.

Good luck Sue!

Clare :)

Good luck Clare and Sue. I had a stress fracture of my left foot once and I had to wear an immobilizer for eight weeks. It was rough starting up an exercise routine again. Just listen to your bodies and don't push too hard. If you injure yourselves again then you'll be back at square one. Also, remember to stretch after your work outs. My best wishes to both of you:)

Not going to try to defend what I said, but I know that I meant no harm in it.

Don't read more into it than necessary...

Sue if I offended YOU in anyway I'm truly sorry...that was not my intent.

Good luck to you as you make your comeback!

I think that you have already gotten pretty good advice here, but I thought that I would throw in my 2 cents as well. Since it was a foot injury and that is where your weight rests, I would do only every other day to start of low impact only, then work your way up from there especially since your foot is still tender. It sounds like you are pretty good at listening to your body, but I know it is hard to be patient so hang in there! You will get where you want to be soon. I know that it is frustrating! Good luck and be safe!

Do what you like to do.. and if it takes longer then so be it.

I took over a year off due to my son's major health issues, mother's descent into mental illness... and you know what I'm in my 40s... into my 7th week and within a lb of my weight and am getting compliments on how I look.... So you will be back in no time.

So come back when YOU ARE READY... DONT PUSH It...

Good luck and BE SAFE.

If you want to PM me about your comeback please do :)

I tried about 5 times until I was up for it mentally.

Thanks all! I think I'm going to go for a 3x week, circuit workouts for 2 weeks, see how things are going and up my workouts accordingly.

Thanks for all the input.

Good for you for starting back up, Sue. I am just finishing about the 3rd week of my comeback (after about 6 months) and I am so happy that I hung in there. I was very inspired by Robyn and her CTX sucess stories.

Hang in there and take it one day at a time!!!!!! Keep us posted on your progress.
