Stability Ball

Is that one of those big inflatable fitness balls some people use for an office chair?

I am 5 ft 10 what size would I need?

I was glad to see that the stability ball would be used in the new videos even though it means I have to go out and buy one now. I just read recently that the stability ball is the best, most effective way to work the abs. I've also heard people mention that the stability ball is what got their abs in shape. So I was interested in trying one after reading and hearing all the positive info about them. It was a nice surprise to find out that Cathe is using it in the new videos.

Hi

I knew there would be threads about this but my problem is a can get a medicine ball no problem but I don't have the room to house a stability ball (I honestly don't want to purchase one).

I am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions about an alternative? I was intending to do the exercises either on the floor or use my step at an angle.

Starbuck -

You and I have a similar dilemma. I live in a tiny townhouse and have taken over the small living room with my step, barbell, and dumbells. An inflated stability ball would really make things tight in there.

And quite frankly, I don't want to buy more fitness stuff either.

Best,

Susan G.

Oh good I thought I would be the only one. My dilemma is the same I have enough room to house my step and barbell when I workout with the barbell and step say with CTX 10-10-10 or Power circuit it means I have to do the floor work then get my step a ball will just add to my space problems.

So like I say depending on the workouts I will use either the floor or my step at an incline. I have promised that this round of tapes will be my last purchase.

I will be adding to my weights but my cutoff period is December and then next year to use all the purchases I have and I won't be adding anymore.

I just got done reading the pre-order descriptions and I wasn't too excited about the stability ball either. I, too, have limited workout space and just don't have room. My mom has one and it is one piece of equipment that I just don't get excited by.

That being said - I think I am going to purchase some of the older Cathe vids I have been wanting and wait for the videos to come out and read reviews before I jump right in.

Hi Katerchen! Yes, thats the one. There are so many names out there for a stability ball. Here are a few: Swiss ball, physioball, power ball, along with some brand names such as "Fit ball", and Resist-a-ball".

Ideally, the right ball size is when you are sitting on the ball with your feet flat on the floor(as if you are sitting in a chair)and your hips and knees form a 90 degree angle with one another.

But if you do not have access to a ball to try this out then you can go by this general scale to help you determine ball size.

If you are 4'11" to 5'4" tall, then you should consider getting a 53cm ball(21 inches).

If you are 5'5" to 5'11" tall you should consider getting a 65cm ball(25 inches).

If you are over 6 ft tall then you should consider getting a 75cm ball (29 inches).

Hope this helps:)

Hi Susan and Babs! You do not have to buy a stability ball for the videos. I will have somebody doing the exercises without the ball as well for the ab work and for the seated/lying leg work in the lower body split workout you can use 5 pound ankle weights as a substitute:).

Thanks so much for the info, Cathe. I hope I didn't sound like a whiner, but the DH has been very tolerant about the way I've been taking over the living room (and the rest of the house) since I married him and moved in (bringing a cat with me, no less). I think a huge inflated ball would just about do him in though - LOL!

How effective would the ab work be without the stability ball?

BTW, the DH is also enjoying your weight workouts!

Oh my God, are you sure I wouldn't get light headed and pass out each time I inflated it - LOL! Can you can use a bike air pump to inflate it?

I have a huge beach ball about the size of a stability ball that I used when I was teaching my young horse not to spook at strange things, and it was quite a job to inflate that puppy!

Anyway, I guess I do have too much hot air to spare.

Best,

Susan G.

I found another name for this. At my daughter's birthing classes they had one and called it a 'birthing ball'!! Apparently they encourage mother's to be to sit on it while in labor to help things along. I lent mine to my daughter just this week. (She's due 9/27 so I think I'll get it back in time for the new workouts LOL)

Oops---I didn't mean by mouth LOL! You can use many different kinds of pumps to inflate the balls. Fitter1.com (and other suppliers) have both balls and the pumps to inflate them. If you're looking for a fast inflate, you could even use an air pump (though watch for overinflation). Also, I just got a tip on inflating: when you do the initial inflation, only go to 80% capacity. Wait 24 hours, then inflate all the way. If the ball is too hard for your liking (the Paul Check heavy duty Dura balls are hard----hmmm, one could read that sentence in a very strange way) you can overinflate a bit, then wait 24 hours and remove some of the air.

Kathleen,

Thanks for the tips! I was pretty sure there was some way to inflate the balls that was stress-free.

Looks like I'll be pre-ordering. I hope they keep the sale open until next payday!

I got a ball that is big enough as stabiltiy ball from Walmart for less than $2.00. I found at children's toy section. I tried several abs crunch on top of it and really felt the tense. I did have little problem staying in on place. It tends to roll little. I decided placed the ball againt wall and it worked perfect. I think i give this one try before I look for the Stability ball.

I gotta add this is a great idea if you want to try one first. I bought one of these at walmart before my baby was born (to use for labor) as opposed to the $50 models. When actually in labor I didn't feel a lot like sitting at all and ended up not using it, but my kids did!!!!! It was actually pretty tough and if you find you like it.....then go for a good one!!! Just a thought.
