Hi Everyone,

I have not been on the internet lately because I get all kinds of pop ups or that I can't get rid of. A friend of mine said I had spy something (I typed the word earlier and it hosed up this message) think that was the word - something about advertising and it gets into your harddrive and hard to get rid of. He suggested I use Ad Aware software and Spybot. I did that and it seems a bit better so far. Does anyone know how to get rid of this $%^$@@##%@%#$#
problem? This SH## should be illegal if it is truly advertising.

I would love any advise.

Thanks,
Winter

Hello Winter,

I have been dealing with the same problem for months. I use a the following:

Ad-aware
Spybot
Spy-subtract

These have helped a bit and I don't get as many pop up ads but they havent' been completely eliminated. These are trial versions that I downloaded for free so perhaps the "complete" versions would eliminate the problem. I also recently purchased Norton's Anti Virus program and it found many many infected files on my computer! These spyware programs even detected "browser highjack" attempts on my computer! Very scary.....

I wish I could be of more help but I can't seem to rid myself of this problem either. I've been at it for months. I've even thought of using the restore disk that came with my computer when I bought it to restore the hard drive to it's original condition. Of course, I would lose a ton of files this way. ; (

Winter, I use Spybot and I like it very much. Also, look around CNET or a similar site for a pop-up blocker. Some are free. That will eliminate the pop-ups, and the Spybot will take care of the adware or spyware. If you have AOL or Yahoo as your ISP, and I believe MSN now also has it, they offer free downloads of pop-up blockers. Earthlink has one too. I'm sure other ISP's have them as well. Also, make sure you're using a good anti-virus program and keep it up to date. If you have Windows XP, that new virus (Sasser, I believe it's called) can affect that so download the patch from the Microsoft website. Good luck!!

Hi Winter!

A little over a year ago I bought and installed Norton's Firewall. I don't know if it eliminates spyware but it sure eliminates any pop ups! It also protects my connection from anyone trying to access my computer.

I agree with you, this sort of practice should be illegal! It's such a pain.

Hi Winter...I use a browser called Mozilla (kinda like Netscape) I like it better than Internet Explorer as it has its own pop-up blocker and seems faster. I also use Ad Aware and Spybot, but recently downloaded Spyware Blaster www.wilderssecurity.com its freeware and actually stops Spyware from getting into your PC. I rarely ever get anything now on my Ad Aware and Spybot scans!! The site for Mozilla if you want to try it is www.mozilla.org . hope this helps....:)...Carole

The funny thing about all that spy and adware garbage is this, I have Norton's security and ran it and showed I have 12 of them things on my computer but wouldn't delete them, so I downloaded spybot and they found more and deleted them so I then again ran Norton's and those 12 are STILL there!!!! so then I proceded to download spyhunter and it found 30!!! and deleted those, then again I ran Norton's and those 12 are STILL there!!!!!! so then my hubby downloaded yet another spy program and ran it and it found more that the others did NOT find and deleted those, I again ran Norton's and still those 12 are STILL there!!!!!!! I have yet to find a single program that will get rid of these 12 awdware/spyware on my stupid computer!! If you visit Uproar I know that is where alot of them come from, that is where mine came from.

I am always afraid of any free downloads because I don't know where the stuff is coming from and if it is just another form of spyware. I went to Yahoo but did not see any free adware detector etc. I probably would trust Yahoo.

I don't think yahoo has a free adward detector, BUT, yahoo does have a free POP-UP blocker. Just go to the home page you will see it. I have both the yahoo pop-up block, and ad-ware ad remover. Rhonda:7

Hi Winter,

Some scumware/adware must be removed with it's own type of removal tool. One of those is CoolWebSearch - it has a lot of variants. Fortunately, there is a tool called CoolWebShredder that has been expanded to get rid many variants of CoolWebSearch as well as some others. It also has an update feature that will downlaod new scumware definitions as they become available. It's a pretty small download.

You can download it at: http://www.spychecker.com/program/coolwebshredder.html

I work in an IT dept, and we use this in conjunction wirh AdAware and Spybot S&D. I also second MckMain's suggestion for Mozilla. One of my colleagues has been playing with that for a few months now and likes it a lot. Hackers don't write crap to exploit it.

HTH.

If you have the Google Toolbar, you can click on options and then click on Ad Blocker and that seems to block pop-ups really well. It also keeps a count on your toolbar of how many have been blocked.
