Sprouted Grain Bread

Hi there everyone! I've read a lot of posts about sprouted grain breads so I decided to try it. You see, I am absolutely addicted to peanut butter (the crunchy, "good" kind...I can't stand the "fake" kind anymore), almond butter and cashew butter. The problem is that I can sit down with a spoon and eat half a jar in one sitting...NOT GOOD! I have never been a big bread fan...bread was only there to hold the PB&J...lol. So I decided to try to stretch a single serving of PB as far as possible and still feel satiated. I was delighted to find that I actually liked the bread. However, since I had a slice two days ago I've had some pretty decent abdominal pain. Could this be from the whole grains in the bread that I'm just not used to (I don't eat much pasta or rice, either) or could this just have coincided with something else totally unrelated (ie, mild food poisoning)? Has anyone else had any problems? I hope it's not the bread because I think it will help solve my PB "issues" :p . Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Wendi

Well, high fiber can cause the intestines to overreact (not a good description but that's what it feels like to me), thus causing abdominal pain. Hopefully Kathryn will see this and respond as I have seen sprouted grain breads recommended in some of her posts. And, hopefully the high fiber is something the body grows accustomed to.

I cannot eat sprouted grain bread because it contains sesame seeds and I am highly, highly allergic to them.

A single slice two days ago is unlikely to be the culprit. I use Ezekiel bread which has 3 grams of fiber per slice. Gastro trouble usually occurs when the fiber intake is boosted drastically. It's probably unrelated to the bread. What else have you been eating?

Greatly increasing one's fiber intake can cause GI distress, but, as Bobbi says, one slice doesn't seem enough to cause a problem.

Did you chew well? Most people don't chew their foods well enough (probably because they're used to fiber-poor processed foods), and that can cause some GI problems.

Peanut butter and peanuts are also sometimes hard to digest, but if you're used to it, you would know what effect it has on you.

Difficult digestion of fiber (before you get used to it) or nuts is usually accompanied by gas.

Also, if you ate fruits after the bread/nut combo, the slow digestion of the bread/nuts would hold up the fruit in the intestines (fruits digest much more quickly), causing it to ferment and cause gas.

ETA: I just reread your post, and see that this was from TWO DAY ago. Unless you are quite constipated, your pb-which would already be gone (if you get my drift!). I'd look more at whatever you ate earlier in the same day.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have practically lived off pb for the past year...my only real diet stumbling block...so I can't point the finger there. I was hoping that it wasn't a sensitivity to the bread as I know it will help with my uncontrolled obsession with pb :+ . Three days later I'm still having issues, leading me to think that it is, in fact, a mild case of food poisoning. The only "weird" thing that I ate Tuesday was a cupcake that was brought in by one of the kids for her birthday. Now that's one way to punish me for eating something that I shouldn't have...LOL! On a positive note, I'm certainly eating much less than usual :7 .

Thanks again,
Wendi

Hi Wendi,

Just wanted to let you know that sometimes you can also develop sensitivities to certain foods. I used to eat raw almonds almost everyday and when I started having digestive problems I had a test which showed I had a sensitivity to it. Sometimes they say it is not good to eat the same thing everyday, we develop sensitivities to them. Hopefully this is not the case for you!!!

Take care,
Sham
