Sports Drinks Question

LauraMax posted a very interesting article concerning bottled water. I would like to add the question which sports drinks/ flavored water to you workout with.

There are so many, CapriSun Sport, Propel, Poweraide,Vitamin H2O, etc. Since I'm confused about which one is the best, I just drink ice water with lemon.

I think most of them are just chemicals and sugars.
I think your water with lemon is just fine, actually.

I put a packet of Emergen-C ElectroMix in a quart of water and drink that during and after my workout. Sometimes I add a pinch of Celtic sea salt to the mix, since it doesn't contain any sodium.

The absolute best 'Sports drink' (actually 'electrolyte replacement drink') is coconut water (the Brazilian soccer team uses it for that purpose). It's not only rich in electrolyites, it has basically the same chemical composition as plasma, and has even been used for transfusions during wartime when blood isn't available.

Hi Robin! :) I'm like you - I just drink plain water. I don't even get fancy enough to put lemon in, but that's a nice touch!

That's really interesting, Kathryn. Where would one be likely to find coconut water? I'd like to try it.

I've found some at health food stores, and also ordered it from www.celticseasalt.com (by the case, and I am a member, so I also get a discount on it).

If you're really ambitious, you can look for young coconuts (not the hairy old ones usually found in grocery stores) in an asian food market or, if you live in California or Florida, in a local store. Then hack into the coconut with a machete and drink the water fresh. (I'd love to live in a place where I could get fresh coconut water, but I don't think I'd try to get one open myself.)

>*lol* Hacking open my own coconut sounds like a surefire way
>for me to lose a limb. :)

I agree: or end up doing major damage to the kitchen. I've seen instructions for doing it where you put the non-knife-hand behind your back, to avoid risk of 'accidents.' But then, I imagine hitting the coconut, and having it roll off the counter, onto the floor.

Alissa Cohen has a raw-food DVD where she shows how to open it, and there is no machete involved, just a big (old) chef's knife, and she does it pretty easily. I'm still not trying it!

Thanks all. I'm going to try the coconut water. I remember seeing it in our fruit market right next to the olive vera juice.

there's just something about plain water first thing in the morning i can't handle... that's all i drink the rest of the day.... but before breakfast... ICK! so during my workout (i work out in the a.m.) i have a peach propel... i know it's not the best thing for me.... but it's better than what i used to drink pre workout/healthier eating days: diet mountain dew

I totally agree! I drink water all day long but first thing in the morning it just doesn't taste good! What's up with that?!

Funny, I just went though a chapter in my nutrition class which gave information regarding sports drinks vs. water. Basically water is the best beverage if you're exercising for under 2 hours. If you're doing endurance exercise (2 hours or more)then sports drinks are best. They should have a carb mixture of 8% or less. The body really can't handle any more than that and it may interfere with gastric emptying. Also, it's best to drink 1 and 1/2 to 2 cups of water an hour or 2 before exercise for best results. :)

Its a sad fact that some endurance athletes get deathly ill due to "water intoxification" or medically known as Hyponatremia. Your body needs a balance when you sweat you lose valuable minerals that water doesn't replace. When I ran long distance I would alternate water and an electrolytic replacement beverage. It's easier to have a bag of IV solution to get your fluids up than it is to recover from a swollen brain.

A good gauge of whether I need to replace electrolytes or not is if I drink 12-16 ounces of water and STILL feel thirsty. I need Gatorade to quench my thirst at that point.
