Splurging

I'm just curious if you guys ever splurge on food that's totaly off your usual eating plan, and what you do to compensate after the fact. I've recently reached my goal weight after losing 35 pounds over the last four years and have been very happy with my success, but was tempted by a dessert that I almost never have and love beyond measure. So I went for it to the tune of probably 2000 calories. I'm feeling a little guilty, though, and would love to hear your words of wisdom. Also, I've been doing a rotation of two cardio days along with the pyramid tapes and S&H at my higest possible weights and it has left me famished. Does anyone else's appetite go up in lockstep with their weight load?

Congrats on reaching your goal! I think the "secret" to splurges is to know that 1) they are what makes life enjoyable and 2) get right back on your horse afterwards. One splurge day is not going to take you back to square one and by going back to your usual plan afterwards (rather than trying to starve yourself and somehow cancel out the calories) will keep you on an even keel! So don't beat yourself up over enjoying a tempting goodie, just treat it as a special occasion! Again, snaps to you for reaching your goal!

Lifting heavy weights makes me ravenous. The 'get back on the horse' advise (advice?) is the best. I really want to know what dessert you had? Do you mind sharing?

What ever is this dessert?!?:9

I don't know if it counts exactly as splurging, but my sister was up last week and we had fun, let's put it that way. I unfortunately wasn't able to work out for most of the week, and we ate ice-cream a couple of times, did Starbucks Chai Cream Frapps, and had an incredible burger at the Char Pit (Lake Tahoe favorite, and one you can smell miles away:D ) which is waaaaay off my eating plan. I did manage to skip the fries, and we were running around like crazy women, but you get the idea. It was a sort of a splurge to sisterhood.

I was feeling guilty, until I got on the scale for the awful truth, and was actually down three pounds!!! I have been pegged at 144 for months, as I have whined here before, and I am now 141. Maybe the break was a bit of a snap for my body, I don't know. The guilt is less, the week was a fun one, but now it is back to WORK!!

Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm going to do PLB and the first five parts of IMAX2 tonight and give myself a break. I'm feeling really good about the entire world these days. Since I've been doing such heavy weights, I would swear by everything holy that I'm standing taller (I'm 4'11), and I know I have better posture. The dessert was a walnut buttercream mini cake from the Cupcake Cafe here in New York. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Cupcake Cafe, they make incredible cakes and cupcakes that are decorated like works of art. It was sooooo good. I enjoyed every bite.

How awesome for you losing three pounds! I'm glad you and your sister had such a great time. we all need that sisterhood from time to time!

Hi Carole, Kathy here! Yes your appetite will increase w/the more weight training you do. Just make sure that the choices you make in food will be protein & carb w/every meal & do start to up the protein; ie. 3 oz. go to 4-5 oz. & make sure your eating 5-6 times a day. I splurge especially during the summer months & I'm still in a size 2. We all need to splurge b/c life wouldn't be worth living! I never feel guilty (& either should you) when I eat ice cream b/c as a general rule I'm so disciplined all of the time that 1-2 splurges during the week isn't going to kill me. And I know how tiny you are so you can definitely splurge!!! You can always do Boot Camp the next day that'll rev up the ole metabolism & knock off whatever you ate. HTH, Kathy
Hope all is well w/you & your family. Email me.

Carole,

Where is the Cupcake Cafe? I too live in NYC, well Brooklyn, but am in the city all the time. I don't really need one of those delicious sounding cakes / cupcakes, but it's always good to know where those resources are for special occasions, right? ;-)

It's also great to know there are other Cathe-ites right here in the Big Apple! My Cathe goal is to one day take a road trip to her studios and workout with her! :7

By the way, my middle name is Carole and it's spelled with an "e" just like yours!

:) When we were on our vacation I felt terribly guilty about the food I was eating which I would normally not eat. But, when I got back home and weighed myself I lost 3 lbs. Must have been all the walking and all the workouts I did before vacation! Don't lose focus and get back on track. You are not doomed!:)

Hi Susan! The Cupcake Cafe is on 39th Street and 9th Avenue. It's truly awesome, and they even have great soups. They have the most stunningly beautiful cakes and reasonable prices. I use them for all special occasions in my family.

Hi Kathy!!!! I miss you. Please email me -- I have so much to tell you, but I just came back from disability two weeks ago and our crack IS department had deleted all my emails and contacts. I hope your family is well -- I think of you often.
Carole

Funny that you say Boot Camp, because that is exactly what I started out with the second my sister left! My husband asked me what I was going to do that day, and I told him. He smiled, and said "Mmmmmmm......'Booty' Camp, for the nice booty you are getting?!" I was laughing!

I have to say that I was dreading it, afraid of getting back on the proverbial horse perhaps, but was surprised at how well I did. Not nearly as tough as I thought it would be considering the time off. I hung right in there for a nice rebound.

You have already gotten some wonderful words but I wanted to add...

I struggle with splurges because I think about how hard I work and how smart I try to be with my food choices but then I think of how short and precious life is and how sad it would be to deprive myself of things I really enjoy. I try to stop and ask "is this worth it?"

A lot of times, it is! That cupcake sure sounded worth it! I get irritated when I "splurge" on something like a stale cookie at work just because it's there. I think, "Now that wasn't worth it, was it?"

I guess I try to really go to town on the things that I love and avoid things that aren't "worth it". But if something IS worth it, look out! I don't want to have any regrets about not eating my mom's peanut butter pie just because it is loaded with the most fabulous calories in the world! Besides, one perfectly healthy meal does not put you at your goal and one ultra-decadent meal isn't going to ruin any progress you've made. It is the ongoing choices you make that determine where you are.

Take care!
Mikie

I splurge one day a week. I follow BFL and have a free day. It's part of my routine so I don't do anything extra the day after. Helps keep me on track during the week.
