soy and thyroid problems

I read today in "Health Magazine" that if you have thyroid problems, you should avoid soy and soy products. The info came from Jullian Michales from the biggest looser program.

Well, Jillian isn't a dietitian and there are always so many rumours about soy it's hard to know what to believe.

The issue with soy and thyroid is that (according to what I read on the net.) it retards the ability of the body to absorb the thyroid hormone that it makes. In essence it makes the body thyroid resistant. So, if you have a thyroid issue I would ask your doctor about eating soy.

Also, the associated benefit of lower incidence of breast cancer in Asian women with their diet high in soy is also a diet extremely high in iodine. Iodine is in fish, most of their diet is augmented with sea vegetables and fish sauce which is similar to soy sauce and used in a similar way in their cuisine. It gives an umami flavor to foods. This is a very interesting topic.

I avoid soy for reasons mentioned in the other thread about soy, so I won't be repetitive here.

I also avoid soy

It is in EVERYTHING!

I also read that book by Jillian Michaels. No, she is not an endocrinologist, but that info was not coming from her. It was coming from the endocrinologists who supplied her the information and research for her book.

I was also told to stay away from soy by a couple of the endocrinologists I sought out earlier this year.

I think it is a personal choice. If you want to eat soy, go ahead. If you are not sure, then don't. There are plenty of foods out there from which to pick so it is not like you are limited. If you are vegetarian, then perhaps beans/lentils/legumes will be a good source of protein for you.
