Source of Omega-6?

I currently take flax seed oil or capsules every morning. I read somewhere that if you only take flax oil (which is loaded with omega-3), that you can become deficient in omega-6. Not sure how much truth there is to that, but wondering about natural sources of omega-6?

Hi Carole,

I just bought the Eating for Life book by Furhman (sp). Is it you, I'm sorry, having trouble remembering..that is a vegan and began eating this way after reading this book? :) dmd

I doubt it. Sixes are more common in our diet. We get more than the threes which are disappearing as animals no longer graze and eat their natural diet. They are polyunsaturates, nuts, poultry, eggs, whole grains, most vegetable oils contain sixes. They are easy to get. And supplement 3's won't make you dificient unless that's all you consume.

Okaaaay, so, Bobbi how do you know all this stuff? You amaze me! You are like a walking, talking data-base of information. Kewl. Wish I could remember what I had for lunch yesterday:) deb

Hi there Edie,

I was checking out your photo's and I have "workout room envy";-). Your family and pets look wonderful! deb

Before I had children I discovered the wonderful world of books. I have tomes on nutrition that would feel unloved it they could feel unloved. For awhile all I wanted to know was related to food. I studied nutrtion too briefly before it interfered with my above mentioned children and I am interested in the diet of animals too. Because we eat them, ya know? Weird, I know, but it makes me happy.

Plus, everyone should utilize the internet. Wonder how the food you eat is raised, you can not only find info on that, you can email people and they will answer your questions! Don't know a polyunsaturate from a mono, google will show you what's what. I highly recommend a nutriton class too. Start with the basics and the sky's the limit.

It's kinda sad that my current thing is cleaning. And get this, DMD, I spent 6 hours working my tail off today and my husband walked in and commented on the thing I did not get to, the schmuck! So I shot him.
A dirty look!

Hi Deb, there is an "Eating for Life" book which isn't Fuhrmans, I am not sure of the author??...The book that got me going vegan is called "Eat to Live" by Dr Joel Fuhrman...great read by the way..:).. I do always enjoy reading Bobi's posts too...she has great insight besides knowledge...:)...Carole

Yes, that is the one..looking at it right now. Boy, there is so much in this book! I can't wait to finish it.

I have dabbled with vegetarianism before and have felt really well on it, but have always included yogurt and tofu to my meals. The last time I ate this way I lost about 30lbs in 5 months. I felt so good. The reason I stopped eating this way was becuase I was found to be extremely anemic. I don't see anywhere where Dr. Fuhrman addresses anemia, yet anyway. Still reading. I added meat back into my diet much to my dismay. Felt like crap and now have acclimated...funny how this happens. I have eaten only veggies, fruit and beans the last couple of days and aside from the gas ( sorry:-( ) I feel SO much better. I have not added my excersise at full throddle yet, hope I have the steam to handle 40-60 mins of cardio...guess we'll see.

How is this way of eating doing for you Carole? My goodness, aren't you a marathoner? You must have to eat a great deal of food to sustain your running! Just a guess. Any informaiton you have would be so appreciated. Thanks~deb

Hi Deb, I never thought I'd ever be a Vegetarian let alone Vegan! I initially read about his book on this site and when I got it, wow! it opened my eyes. My DH and I were just going to cut back our animal protein slowly (never a huge beef eater , but loved chicken and turkey) until one night when I was adding some chciken to our salad and he commented "aren't we going to stop eating that altogether?" So we went Vegan. We both lost weight, he lost 30 lbs the first 6 weeks and I lost 17. I did loose a few more but my body seems to like a certain weight and I gained a few back at X-Mas. I do remember being real gassy in the beginning but I think your body adapts..now for me its certain things like soy beans for sure.

I love this way of eating, you do have to work at it and once I got a few cookbooks, the best being The Vegan Planet (400 recipes) I make myself try new things almost every week. I have found so many foods I never even heard of. As far as working out I had some weakness in the first 2 weeks on my long runs. Not when I lifted or doing any indoor cardio. Yes, I am a marathoner and during training I might eat a bit more protein than usual. I like Tofu, tempeh and have tried seitan a couple of times. A site that has been very helpful to me is www.vegsource.com There is an Eat to Live discussion board among others. I really liked the New Veggie board and Bryanna is great about answering questions, plus posting recipes!

The only downfall is eating out. Not many restarants in my area have vegetarian menus and I find it a pain to figure out what to eat in them. So we normally do mexican as they usually have a vegetarian menu and I just get a vegetarian dish without cheese or sour cream. Honestly, I'd rather make something at home...:)

I'm happy to help and there are also other Vegetarians/Vegans here that will answer most any thread about vegetarianism. Feel free to email me anytime you want. I know the first 6 weeks can be the most difficult...:)...Carole
