Sounds in Ears

Hi Everyone,

Has anyone experienced sounds in their ears? I have this sound that started in the summer and I would only notice it when I was reading or meditating. Now it seems louder at times and it occurs more often than not, I don't have anything else going on, just this. It's not a ringing, if I had to pick something I would say it reminds me of a forest sound. No! I am not weirding out, this is for real!

I would definitely have it checked out. My friend's husband had a sound in his ears and finally he went to the dr. They discovered his blood pressure was high, so put him on pills. After a couple of weeks, he went back, and his blood pressure was down, but he still heard the noise. Not as often, but he still heard it. The dr. decided not to take any chances and sent him to a specialist. Turns out he had a blood clot in the back of his neck. Within a week they operated, and if they would not of found it, by next Christmas he would of been dead. I would have it checked, it is better to be safe than sorry.

When I read your post it made me think that I just read this about ear buzzing in a magazine. I am going to just type it up and let you read on: This was in the First magazine in Jan 5 Issue. It is in the Health part call Doctor on Call and this is the question that the person was asking:

One night a few monthes ago I went to bed with perfectly good hearing and woke up in the morning with a loud buzz in my ears. The noise continues 24 hours a day-I haven't had a moment's silence since, and I'm exhausted after so many nights! My doctor says I have tinnitus. Can I do anything to reverse it?

Here is the Doctor' answer:

Although there is no specific treatment for tinnitus {a persistent sound in the ears), you can minimize its impact on you life. First, visit an otolaryngologist, a specialist who can help determine possible causes, such as exposure to loud noise, certain medications, allergies and ear infections. Treating root sources like these may eliminate the buzz, but often the only option is to manage the symptoms. An audiologist can offer copping strategies, such as tinnitus retraining therapy. This technique has an 80 percent success rates and involves wearing a small low-level white-noise generator behind the ear and training your mind to ignore the sound.

I just thought you would like to know. I am not saying that this may be your problem but I just wanted to let you know what I read. Hope you find out your problem very soon. Good Luck:)

I am subscribing to this thread because I want to hear more about this. I hear noises in my ears (usually just one) that sound like a man's voice, but sometimes higher. It is definitely like a pulse, and intensifies when I squat down or change position in some way. I think in my case I have a thin blood vessel close to my eardrum. For months it can be silent, then it happens for a day or so.

Sometimes it takes me by surprise, because it sounds so much like a voice at first! It is not ringing (tinnitus) because I have had that too, and this is different. I have a feeling in my case that it's harmless, but I am bookmarking this thread in case anyone has any stories (including you, Annabel!)

I am going to call my ear doctor tomorrow and make an appointment, It's horrible not knowing what it is and mine is now constant. My pharmacy told me to try Sudafed as I can also at times feel some pressure, but that didn't help. I will keep you posted.

I had something similar about a year ago. Kind of noise thing and the pressure. After a couple of days I tryed taking Claritin and it was magically gone in about an hour. I followed up with a Dr visit and she said I had fluid in my ears. She then told me to take Claritin if it happened again (of which I'd already done!). Anyhow, she said I might I have an allergy and if it persisted they would do some testing. It's never happened again!

A few years ago after a bad cold i kept trying to clear my ears out (you know by trying to make your ears pop) and did it so much that afterwards i heard this funny (though far from funny) noise. Like a hummmmmmmmm that would not quiet. I went to the docs and he said i had tinnitus and just better get used to it! Or ... and this is such good advice (i think not) was to sleep with the radio on at night to drown out the noise! What advice. I still have it from time to time but do my best to focus my attention else where so i hear it far less. It is better than it was for sure.

The first appointment that I could get was for the 21st and it is horribly expensive, when I went to this doctor before I had insurance and a job, then I got laid off. Tried the Claritin and it didn't work, I think I might try going to my regular MD and see what she has to say.

I can't remember for sure if it was a hissing...seems like it was more of a low hum. What struck me though was your analogy of a forest noise because for some reason I can relate to that! In fact I'd forgotten all about this until you said the forest noise! I can't remember for sure, but I think it had been happening for like a week to 10 days.

I am sorry to hear of the sounds in your ears. Unfortunately it sounds like tinnitus.

I have a dear friend who went to bed perfectly fine one night about 2 years ago, and woke up with a loud buzzing in his ears the next morning. It hasn't gone away yet.

He had a terrible time with it for almost a year. He lost lots of weight, lost his job, and had anxiety attacks. He went to numerous doctors and therapists, none of which helped him. Finally, after all else failed, he learned how to deal with it in his own way. I don't know all the details, but I do know that his life is back on track now and he is doing well. He still hears the noises, but he is fine.

If you are interested, I'll be glad to find out from him some sources of information for you. He has learned just about everything there is to know about tinnitus and would be a good person to help you.

Good Luck!

I would be interested in hearing what your friend has to say. This high blood pressure might not be related. I wish I could get a handle on the sound, when I told the doctor "Forest Sound" she looked at me sort of funny and said "maybe a rustling sound", who knows, I guess that's about as close as one can get, it's so hard to describe.
