Some (workout) days are harder than others....

hi everyone,
i did hiit 30/30 followed by the leg workout from MIS last night and it was an awesome workout. but, due to work & life in general, i haven't been working out as consistently as i would have liked for about the past month. when i used to do hiit 30/30 or double wave pyramid, it was hard, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't "throw up in a bucket" intense. last night, i had to take 2 or 3 breaks during 30/30. that was a little disheartening. i hate feeling like i've started to lose the fitness gains that i made before this past month.
i'm still gonna get back up on my horse, though, and keep up with my workouts. :)

how do you all approach getting back into your fitness groove after time off/a long break?
thanks!!!

I think it's normal

I've had days where I could do Kick, Punch and Crunch with little effort and other times where I'm beat red and just hanging on. I don't think there isn't a person here who has never had a day like that. It happens. That's why Cathe says to go with how your body feels.

Wow, it's not just me. Last night I "attempted" MMA Fusion. NOT. I'm 5'8" and some of those moves are just designed for much shorter bodies. And that bloody thing is SO high impact. My knees were screaming - I felt like I was actually going to hurt myself on the second cycle - sharp pains. It was sooooo frustrating. I took the DVD out, moved it to the bottom of the pile, and did the Kickbox only mix from 4DS instead. But it made me feel very disheartened and instead of feeling good about myself, my workout made me feel badly. That feeling is still lingering today and now I'm stuck with legs tonight - my biggest weakness. I feel a not-so-good week coming on. sigh

This happens to all of us! You just have to listen to your body and don't push yourself if you feel like you're going to die. It's one thing to challenge yourself but another to push your body past its limits. Last week, I was sucking wind when I did Drill Max. I had to stop 20 min in because I felt like I was going to puke. This morning I did the entire workout and wanted more! Like Cathe says, it all depends on how you slept, what you ate, and what's going on in your life. Everyone has days like these! Don't let it discourage you :)

For me: do favorite (and easier) videos

I confess I went off the wagon back in mid-August of last year, and only started back on-wagon five weeks ago. So I am a bad case.

What I have been doing is the following: post (on the "Check-ins" page, on Sunday morning), my six days' videos for the upcoming week. By posting it, I commit to doing the videos for others to see. I also do the videos I consider the most fun and doable, so I am not intimitated to wimp out that day. For example, cathe's MIS, S&H, and PH are fun -- so I do these for sure, and often :). For my aerobics days -- my weak spot-- I only schedule very easy tapes, so I know I won't have difficulty. For the strength tapes, I lighten up on the weights, again, to make everything doable. Finally, I schedule one day off a week, for sure, so as not to wear myself out!!!

Yep, it happens to all of us. Several days ago I exercised for the first time in over a week due to a chest cold/ear infection, and mid-workout I had to decrease my step height to 4", which I've NEVER had to do before! And I remember about a month ago, I had to stop LowMax after only the second combo/blast because I just hit a wall, wasn't even sure why, I wasn't sick, it just wasn't happening that day. Usually I do all of LowMax and love it.

I think the best advice has already been mentioned above: just listen to your body as you get back into your exercise routine. And don't be too hard on yourself!

great advice

thanks, everyone, for the words of wisdom. :)
i know you all are right...today was a much better workout day. i did the kickbox workout from 4 day split, followed by pure strength chest/shoulders/triceps, and it felt great!
i gotta quit being so hard on myself. ;)

Tell me about it,

Had Imax 2 the other day, still haven't completed even the half of it, but, all things considered, subbing Step Jam was the way to go, really hot, lifting more this week, knowing I probably couldn't give Imax 2 my best.

So I did Step Jam on the fly so to speak, which I never do with steps I haven't done before, I like to get the steps down first, and because I have this "goldilocks" approach to everything, stick to the rotation, rotation, rotation, it keeps me working out every day so, hey. :p

There's always something to smile about I think, like just "doing something" :D

ever optimistic!

I hear ya!! (tried to send my replyand my computer went all wonky)!! So, like I was trying to say, I made an attempt to take a rest week about two weeks ago and didn't do too good at resting, then the following week I ended up with like a zillion appointments and even had nightmares of my butt sagging (like those Salvador Dali paintings when the clock melts!:rolleyes::p)

This week I'm having MUCH better luck with my workouts but I am STILL listening to my body! Sometimes I think it's our body's natural rhythm. Give youself a BUNCH of credit for getting back into the groove! You go girl!!

Like everybody else has already said.... it happens to ALL of us!

I can certainly relate. Some days I am able to do KPC pretty darn well and other days I have to take a couple breaks. I agree you need to listen to your body, but unfortunately that doesn't remove the frustration level I get when I know I can do better. I just try my best to push through and hope for the best with the next workout. Hang in there! You are not alone.

Same here! I'm not a morning person, but I get up at 5 a.m. to get it done. It's less stressful and I don't wuss out if I've had a busy day, so I'm more consistent. However, it's tough getting a full night's sleep! I work all day and DH goes to school at night, so we don't see each other all week. I wait up for him and this semester, he's in class really late, then he has an hour's drive home on a good night! So, I don't get to bed until around 11 p.m., don't fall asleep right away and if my pups are up in the middle of the night, that's even worse!

This gives me some low energy mornings, let me tell you! This week, I've had a rough workout 2 days in a row! Yesterday High Step Challenge kicked my butt and today IMAX3 did it! I love the IMAX workouts, but it just wasn't there. I can't wait to get my morning mojo going again!

The important thing is that you keep plugging along, putting as much effort as you have to give on any particular day and really kick it up when you feel good!

Cheers for your continued efforts and don't get discouraged! It'll all come back to you!
