Some Amazon.com questions

The website's founder was on Jon Stewart last night (on a side note, I love that guy--he is absolutely hilarious, plus adorable in a little brother kind of way :p) & he mentioned something about a $79 shipping fee that gives you unlimited shipping for a year. I've searched & searched & can't seem to find anything on the site? Is this some huge secret? Does anyone else know about this?

And they showed the new Kindle. Who has the Kindle? I am jonesing for a Kindle! :D

It is called Amazon Prime. You get free 2 day shipping on any order. They have a free trial for a month, so if you don't like it you don't have to pay the $79

Personally, I don't get the big deal about it. Whenever I order from Amazon I always get free ground shipping. Then again, I never order anything that I need right away, so I guess if you use the other shipping methods it's worth it--and if you order that much from them. If that link doesn't work it's under help and shipping.

Tara, I think it'd save me a ton of money. There are times I place an order from multiple vendors & you get charged shipping from each vendor. So say you order $150 worth of stuff from 4-5 vendors, you end up spending close to $30 in shipping alone.

You only get supersaver shipping for items that come directly from Amazon, which is a pretty small percentage of everything you can buy from the site. So I guess that's another Q--does that $79 shipping cover only stuff directly from Amazon, or from all their vendors?

Going to check out your link to see if I can find the answer.........;)

Just a heads up - not everything qualifies for Amazon Prime. There are items that regular charges apply. I'd look up a few different vendors that you buy from on Amazon and see if it says that Amazon Prime applies. It should tell you just like it does if an item qualifies for free shipping.

Thanks Liann--I saw. I emailed them to get clarification. I don't think it'd be worth it if it was just stuff directly from Amazon since you can get the free shipping on almost all their stuff.

My husband and I been an Amazon Prime members for years. I receive my packages right away (2 days) with no minimum purchase or wait. No hassel. For us, it's worth it and it saves us money.....yes, we buy that much. You really have to know your spending habits and figure out if it's worth it for you. This week alone I can't even tell you how many packages I've had delivered....from printer ink to books. I love it.

Also my new Kindle 2 is being delivered this week. :) My book orders will go down (I'll be ordering Kindle Edition books), but I'm very sure I will continue to order just as many other items from amazon. It's just so easy.

<gasp> I am so jealous! After you've used it, can you please give me a review? :) It's so darned expensive, but SOOOOOOO tempting!

Amazon prime only applies to things sold directly by Amazon.
Some Amazon vendors have free shipping, but it's not an Amazon prime bonus.

Laura,

I believe it covers anything from Amazon. In your case, Prime is worth it, definitely. You also get a free 1 month trial to see if you like it. If you don't, you can cancel it. No harm, no foul.

So far I love it. It's also much thinner than the original.

I've glanced throught the Kindle 2 user manual, charged it and even downloaded a book (ordered the book online and it downloaded in a flash). Great feature. I can also order books from the unit itself.

Being from the bifocal crowd, I also changed the text size....made it a bit bigger.....you have quite a variety of choices.

I fiddled with the "read to you" feature....cool, but both the male and female voices can't compare to voice of my imagination so I don't think I'll use that feature a lot, but it's nice to have (you can also change the speed of the reading voice if you like) if you get really lazy.

I still can't believe I had to order the bookcover separately...it doesn't come with one. I ordered the amazon cover and the Patagonia cover (it's waterproof) two days ago. I received them both with the Kindle today. Both are okay, but for the price I paid, I still think it should at least have come with one cover (grrr...).

You know there are a lot of free e-books on line.....I mean, I really never have to even buy another book (well, in theory ;)). There are so many classics that have passed out of copyright and are just there for everyone to read:

As you can tell, I'm really pleased and sure I'll get a lot of use out of it.

Amazon prime also allows you to share your membership with 3 other "family" members, even if they live at a different address and have a completely different last name. My husband has split the cost of his with 3 other people, which made it only $20/year, and totally worth it if you order stuff from amazon and like instant gratification. In order to add a "family" member, you just need to know their birthday and email address.

2 day shipping is free, and next day shipping is only $3.99 per item. It comes in really handy for last minute shoppers, like me. Especially around the holidays.

I love my Prime membership. I got free 2 day shipping on the Cathe weighted vest. I also like to use it to buy diapers in bulk...get them right away!
