so is this just me or what?

As I have mentioned earlier I am working with a personal trainer at the gym. What I seem to be finding is that I leave the gym not feeling nearly as worked out as when I do a Cathe video. At the actual moment of lifting its difficult (i.e. I couldnt lift heavier) but then afterwards I'm not sore or anything and I'm not exhausted like after a cathe vid. Its not the trainer's fault either because I have been following the BFL plan so she hasnt really had natyhing to do with the workout plan. Mostly I'm paying her just to be my spotter. I'm guessing that the videos are proving harder for me because of the tempo differences, rep differences, more exercises, etc. Today I worked out on my own, followed the plan, finished it and tacked on some more workouts just cuz I barely felt a thing.

I'm serioulsy considering going back to my videos except 1 thing....I've got 3 more weeks with the trainer. I'm wondering what I Could do with her AND do my videos without over doing anything.....

I totally feel like the standard for a great workout, especially lifting, has been raised with Cathe. At least for me. I do think there are kick butt trainers and/or workouts out there, it is just that they are harder to find. Right now I have 2 fave spin instructors and a sports circuit instructor that rule my world ;) I haven't had a trainer so if I am lifting at the gym I do my own thing from everything I have learned. I imagine, also, there are many trainers out there who are not remotely qualified or know less than the trainee. I bet there are more of those than the good ones these days. Anyway, I do know how you feel.

Age only matters if you're cheese.

If I had three weeks with a personal trainer and I was not satisfied, I would ask her to be mean for the last few weeks! }(

Tell her to push push push. I would also have her show you different exercise machines.

Just a suggestion,

Have fun! :) :)

I once hired a trainer. I lifted so heavy, it kicked my butt!!! He had me doing pull ups, heavy t bar rows, bench press with a lot of weight. I was doing S&H at the time and was in really good "cathe" shape. I was supersetting with the trainer. He pushed me so hard I would be grunting and squirming to get the weight up. My muscles would be so tired I could barely move afterwards! I loved going to him for my weight training. Sadly, he was so annoying and really expensive, so I had to move on...

What I don't get is......with Cathe, most tapes, you are bench pressing, what, 60 pounds max??...and that is up there for most her tapes, right? Well, if you go to the gym and lift 100+ pounds bench press, 3 sets of 10....how are you NOT going to be sore?? I can lift SOOOO much heavier at the gym than at home with Cathe. It is just with Cathe, I move a heck of a lot faster through the exercises, but at the price of using less weight..

Are you not lifting enough?? Maybe you think you are really pushing to your limit, but you are not??? Sorry, but Cathe workouts don't put you in such great shape that NOTHING in the gym is going to exhaust you.

Just a thought. Only you know your body.:7

With cardio and weights or just one or the other? With cardio, you should be just to the edge of throwing up basically when you are done with your 20 minutes.

With weights, if you have already been workin gout, I don't know that you will always get sore. But it does sound I'd try heavier weights if you aren't seeing progress. I found the BFL workouts tougher than some of Cathe's videos or as tough anyway.

You should be able to great a great workout at the gym. Maybe your trainer is not pushing you hard enough. Or you are not doing enough exercises for each muscle group. Cathe's given you a great foundation. Kick it to the next level during these next 3 weeks.

You know, it might be b/c she knows you're already knowledgable about exercise that she thinks you'd give her feedback if you didn't feel it was tough enough.

Give her a call a day or two before your next workout & just be honest--tell her you're not feeling it & you want the intensity level increased. Tell her you want to struggle to sit down & stand up. Tell her you want to strain to get a bottle of water from the table to your mouth. If she knows what she's doing she'll kick your butt for the next 3 weeks.

That actually sounds good to me: sounds like you're getting a good workout ("the actual moment of lifting" is "difficult") but not getting burnt out ('exhausted"). Maybe it's the pacing, maybe there's more recovery allowed, maybe you are recovering better. Also, Cathe's workouts are mostly endurance, while BFL is strength oriented, and I've always found that endurance makes me more sore than strength (S&H has never given me much DOMS, even though I lift as heavy as I can safely, while PH gets me every time).

How long have you been doing this? Wait until you have had at least 2 weeks with the trainer and see what your results are. If you don't see any results, then get the trainer to change it up. And why not bring this up with her now, anyway? She might have some insights as well.

I'll go ahead and bring this up with her when next I see her. Maybe that's it, the strength vs endurance. Strength has always been "easy" for me while endurance always kicks my butt. I'm guessing that's it.

I miss my videos :(
