So, how bad is wine, really?

I watched a BBC show over the weekend wherein the nurse was telling this woman, who clearly did drink quite a bit, that each glass of wine is the equivalent of 6 teaspoons of refined sugar.

Today I'm looking on the and I don't find such information.

Any thoughts? I eat pretty clean but I do enjoy a few glasses of wine during the week. Maybe I need to not?

Wine is definitely not on the top 10 list of clean eating. It's no where up there at all. All of the studies they've done about the health benefits have been aimed at men, not women, so there is no real data saying there is any benefit to drinking wine for women.

That being said, I'm not giving up my occasional glass of wine. I take into consideration the calories, and drink only in moderation. I just enjoy a glass of wine. I think all of life is a set of balances. If you would feel no loss by cutting out wine, by all means do it! If you would miss your occasional glass, then continue to enjoy, but only on special occasions. (I happen to find Friday night a very special occasion!). I firmly believe in all things in moderation.

I agree. I just love wine especially merlot and an occasional glass is fine. I see wine as a treat for me. I agree with Christine.

Not bad enough where I'll stop partaking. Ahem. ;)

Very bad if your goal is to eat clean, build muscle and lose fat. It is full of empty calories and lowers your inhibitions, leading to overeating and overdrinking. I'll never give it up.

I'm in. Whoot.

If there is a wine party I am there! I can't have one now because it's too cold in CT. I'll have one this summer on my deck! LOL

Well Christine, Friday night IS a special occaision and we like our wine religiously with Friday or Saturday dinners.

According to Joel Furehman (ETL) is is not harmful to have 100 or 150 calories per day of a cheat food. But for those trying to lose weight, it will not be helpful.

FYI I started the ETL plan last spring and did not give up a glass of wine or three per weekend and still lost weight. This is just another example of how we each must fine our own balance and that it is very individual. Unfortunately, for some people one drink leads pretty quickly to another and over eating or over drinking results. (I tend to alternate my glasses of wine with a glass of seltzer. )

I will NEVER give up my wine! I love my occasional glass of Pinot Grigio. Nothin' beats relaxing on the couch with a glass of Pinot after a hard week!

I do not believe in moderation for anything. I exercise like a mad woman, party like a crazy woman, and eat whatever I please. My weight always stays within the same 5 lbs. Life is way to short for moderation.I am off to Hawaii in a couple of weeks, and can't wait to enjoy wild abandonment there!!!!
