SNM-- DVD Player suggestions?

Fitstick

Hello SNM,

I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions on a reliable DVD player that works well with the dual layer DVD's?

My Toshiba has been giving me a lot of problems and has a hard time switching between segments which can become quite annoying.

If you could give me some suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

I'm not SNM (although I am INTO S&M), but my Sony 5-disc programmable has been an absolute delight. I know, even less than a year later, that the version I got has already been updated with even more bells and whistles, but the big point is I've never had problem one with it, either switching among discs OR shifting back and forth among chapters on a single disc. You should be able to get a good one for under $170.00 these days.

What a great thread! I know people have posted about DVD players before but with constantly changing technologies and more and more people using DVD's, it's nice to get updated. I hope people respond with brand names, model numbers and what they like and don't like.

I have a Toshiba 2-disc DVD player and it won't allow me to program more than one Cathe DVD at a time. The book is vague but I think multiple disc programming works with some DVD's and not others.

I'm in the market for a new DVD player and appreciate any advice given.

Thanks!

www.videofitness.com has a DVD suggestions section. I don't know how up-to=date it is.

From what I've read in threads here and on VF, the Sony players seem to be really good (and the multi-disc players will actually program across discs), while Toshiba have given quite a few people problems(I have a cheap, 1-disc RCA I bought at Walmart, and it's fine by me!)

When I saw the title to your thread the first thing that popped into my mine was "anything but Toshiba"...Then I read your post and saw that you have a Toshiba. I don't know why, but Toshiba's seem to have more problems than any other player I know of.
I had a Sony that worked great for two years before it died. Sony is known for making excellent players. We have been using Go Video players in the office lately and they work great and are really cheap. The only other suggestion I would make to you is to get a player with auto programming.

Thank you very much for your replies.

Do you suggest a 5 disk or one disk player? I was wondering if that makes any difference in quality.

Hi, Fitstick! It's me again!

I would suggest kicking over the traces and getting a 5-disker, rather than a single-disc Sony model. Having multiple discs already in the player cuts down tremendously on the time required if you want to mix and match segments from various workouts on disc. And because you save time that way (not to mention the irritation), you just get more and more fit because there are fewer lulls in your session.

One thing I like about my Sony (keeping in mind that I'm a technological Neanderthal who's never mastered the programming features) is that you can "mark" a specific disc at a specific point where you want it to start, and the "mark" will be "remembered" by your Sony player for at least a week. Thus, if I want to do a mish-mosh comprised of, say, Rhythmic Step warm-up, Power Circuit circuit segment, and Boot Camp cardio/lower-body only premix, one of the Ab Hits plank segments and Cardio+Weights ab routine, I can place each of the discs in trays 1-5, mark the beginning of each segment right after it starts to play, turn the machine off, go to work, come back home, start the thing and just go to town using the "disc-skip" feature when I'm done with each segment. Too cool.

The more discs your machine has the more you can customize each workout. The only problem will be that you develop too many cool workouts, and have to puzzle through too many good choices.

Can you tell I've had a tad too much espresso already? }(

I recently bought a JVC 7-disk progressive-scan (better picture) DVD player for $129 at Sam's Club. I have only had it for about two months now, but no problems so far. I checked reviews online before I bought it and no one has written anything bad about it yet. I don't spend time programming across disks so I am not sure what it will do along those lines. I just do some stretching or jogging in place with the remote in my hand to get to the next workout section that I want to do. It is much better than trying to change disks with sweaty, shaky hands in the middle of a workout.

Okay A-Jock, you have me sold on the Sony player!! What model do you have?

Thank you so much for your responses. I hope I can get it this weekend and get rid of the frustrating Toshiba player...

Hi!

Will you please give us an update if you ever try to program your JVC DVD player across discs? I have a JCV VCR which I love. I used to take it outside to do my workouts all the time and I've never had a problem. Between the humidity and getting bashed around, I certainly wouldn't have been surprised had I had problems.

Thanks!

Hi, Fitstick!

The model I have is already obsolete (bought December 2002); the updated model is:

Sony DVD Player; model number DVP-NC665P/S 5-disc player.

Go onto Sony.com, or call any gizmo joint worth its salt and read off that model number to them; they should be able to get you what you need. $179.95 is the website price; I'll bet you can get a better deal through a gizmo joint.

Good luck!

RLMS,

What model number is your JVC player? I have a JVC TV & VCR and I want to stay within the JVC model family. I'm just weird like that.

We've had a Toshiba, a Yukai, a JVC and Panasonic DVD players and they've all been good although the Toshiba and Yukai had problems playing some discs. The JVC we have is excellent but we're really happy with our Panasonic S75EBS player. Even with the old TV, the difference in sound and picture quality was huge and with the new TV, everything looks and sounds great. I'm happy with my Panasonic and would definitely use them again. They're customer service was excellent too.

Jilliana, the model number is XV-F80.

Shelley, the owner's manual says that you cannot program playback across disks. Also, you can only program playback order for audio CDs or VCDs (video CDs).

Hope this helps,
Rebecca

Hi
Whatever you do, don't get APEX, in my opinion. DH went on a newsgroup to see about getting ours repaired and forget it. They were desinged to last no more than a year. Everyone posted the same problems after having it the same amt of time. We paid like $50 for it, but it only lasts a year at best. DH said there are a few good one's we will look at, here they are:

Panasonic - dvds35s ($70 - 100)
Sony - dvpns325s ($75 - 100)
There were rave reviews for these two.
