Slow & Heavy Sets and Reps

Cathlete
Hi all,

I'm contemplating buying the S&H DVD. Right now, I like PUB/PLB, but some weeks I think I'd like to change up my heavy days to S&H.

Besides the counts, how are the exercises/sets/reps different in S&H than PUB/PLB. Also, right now, I'm doing PLB with moderately challenging weight as I don't want to bulk up my legs. Would S&H Legs make me bulky, or no?

Thanks for your advice!

In S&H the types of exercises that you do are similar to most of Cathe's other weight workouts...

As for the sets and reps, she sticks to 3 sets of 8 reps with one minute rests in between so that you can lift as heavy as possible.

I don't think S&H would make you bulky bc the leg portion is only about a half hour. Also, you wouldn't have to lift really heavy if you didn't want to. You will still feel the burn of the slow count with a moderate weight (at least I did!):)

Joy,
I like PLB better than S&H lower body, so I usually do PLB when I do a rotation of S&H upper body. I just found that some moves (like lunges) are not knee friendly for me at such a slow speed.

Thanks Kathryn and Balletgrrl for replyign so quickly.

One more thing - Ab Hits - Do either of you have it? If so, is it a must-have?

I had Ab hits, but for me it wasn't a must-have, so I sold it on Ebay. I prefer Cathe's more recent ab work to most of the segments on this DVD, and I already have them on other DVD's. Also, I didn't like having to use the mix-and-match function(which goes back to the menu after you do each section you choose one-by-one) rather than some kind of function that would allow you to program an entire workout before you did it, and have it continue without stopping.

Yes, there are premixes on Ab Hits!

Hi Joy! I feel exactly the opposite of my same-name friend Kathryn here. :) To me Ab Hits is one of the crown jewels of my collection. I own every Cathe DVD, so yes, I've got all these abs segments on other DVDs. But Ab Hits makes it possible to quickly add on a traditional abs segment, a core/planks segment or both, in varying lengths of time, to any other workout. It's just handy. You betcha there are premixes on Ab Hits, and good ones IMHO. I also don't find it bothersome to sit up, take a little drink of water and then start a new segment if I'm in the mood to do a little mixing and matching. LOVE those breaks! ;-)

To each her own! :) My vote would be a big YES, buy it and enjoy it!

RE: Yes, there are premixes on Ab Hits!

I also Agree with Kathy because sometimes even on the other workouts that I do I just don't feel like doing that type basic crunch or core workout so I use my abs hits and do maybe 2 different abs section. But if your the type of person that will do the abs follow by the workout your doing strength or cardio maybe it isn't for you. IMO I would say it would be a nice collection:)

RE: Yes, there are premixes on Ab Hits!

Thanks ladies! I think I'll give both S&H and Ab Hits a try. Abs are usually an afterthought to me because my abs aren't in bad shape, but if I had a DVD with specific ab workouts, I think I could coax myself into to working them more often to get a 6-Pack!

Thanks for the reviews!
