Slow and Heavy 3 days in a row?

I personally would put a day in between, doing each workout once a week (one upper body on day 1, lower body on day 3, second upper body on day 5). That way, there is sufficient recovery from heavy weight work (YMMV: the older you are, the more recovery time you will need and benefit from.)

Thanks, Kathryn!

I have been having some knee issues lately and want to give then a break. I've only been walking and doing upper body this week (squats, lunges, etc. really bother my knees).

Allison: I also agree with Kathryn. You never want to work the same body parts with heavy weights two days in a row. You need at least 48 hours recovery time.

Also, I reduced my heavy lower body to once per week for the same reasons, and then do lots of other lower body work with light weights the rest of the week. I have noticed my knees aren't bothering me as much. I teach cardio/sculpt classes, so for me doing the lower body with less weight happens 5 days per week no matter what. But, for a while I was also doing heavy LB 3 times per week on top of all that. OY, that was too much. So, as a CPT and also fitness instructor I always insist my students not work the same body parts with less than 48 hours recovery. Your muscle fibers need that time to repair. If you were to do S&H three days in a row, your muscles would always be in a breakdown state and you could get injured. Plus it will be harder to see results because it is in the recovery period that the muscle gets repaired and you see the results of your hard work.

Just my 2 Cents!! HTH

Well, I would be doing S&H Chest and Back one day, the next Bi's and Tri's, and the next, Legs and Shoulders. (Or I could mix those up). I would never be focusing on the same body part each day, but I know each part assists in their own way.

I guess the safest bet is to take a day between each, right?

Hi Allison!!!

I would do Chest + Back, Legs and Shoulders and Bi's +Tri's in this order.
I did this before and it was fine.

Hi-

Ideally, I would agree w/ Kathryn on putting a day in between.. However, you could mix up the bodyparts and have one really intense day and then one easier day. I think the biggest concern is putting the chest and shoulder on consecutive days, without having enough recovery time.
However, you could work your chest and shoulders on the same day. (But I think its a good idea to then give your upper body a total rest the next day.)

Here is what I mean:

Chest/Shoulders/Tris
Legs
Back and Bis

Or...
Chest/Tris
Legs
Back/Shoulders/ Bis

Then Day 4 should no upperbody either.

If you are new to S and H, I would suggest first doing one of the workouts every other day. If not, try the above suggestion and see how it works for you.. Those 3 parts in one day will be pretty intense if you aren't used to the workout.

Take care, Lynn M.

Great idea, Lynn! Beautiful. I'm not new to the S&H series so this sounds like a great way to change it up! Thanks!
