Skin care line?

I'm home today and have time to shop. }( Just finished reading the post where a few people recommended Paula's Choice skin care line. I checked it out and saw that the prices are reasonable and I'm in the market for some skin care. So, what do you think? Who has tried Paula's Choice and likes it or doesn't like it? Does anyone else have something they highly recommend?

In case anyone doesn't already know, I've been having problems with rashes, itching and swelling on my face, particularly my eyes. My primary goal is to find something that won't irritate my skin, and in fact will tend to calm it. BTW, I have very dry skin with very few blemishes and very little oiliness.

So, come on ladies, help me spend my money! :D

I'm a huge fan of Paula's Choice products. I use most of the skin care and some of the makeup. I give it the line a huge thumbs up!

My favorite products are the BHA lotion, the blemish fighting solution, the new Super Recovery Anti Oxidant concentrate and the Hydrating Treatment Cream. You probably wouldn't need the first two I mentioned, and the last two sound like they would be right up your alley.

Since you have really dry skin, I would suggest the products listed in her dry to very dry skin care regimen.

Her products are also fragrance free which eliminates a lot of the sources for potential irritation right there.

I believe that Paula also has a money back guarantee. I'd definitely give her products an enthusiastic thumbs up and suggest you give them a try.

P.S. Her shampoo and conditioner are really nice as well!

Thanks so much Sabine! Here is what Paula recommends for me:

Battle Plan for Dry to Very Dry Skin

1. Skin Recovery Cleanser for Normal to Very Dry Skin
2. Skin Recovery Toner for Normal to Very Dry Skin
3. 1% Beta Hydroxy Acid Lotion or 8% Alpha Hydroxy Acid Gel
4. Essential Moisturizing Sunscreen SPF 15 for Normal to Dry Skin (daytime)
5. Skin Recovery Moisturizer (nighttime)
6. Skin Recovery Super Antioxidant Concentrate
7. Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask (as desired after cleansing)

The prices look very reasonable. What do you think of the make-up?

You can buy a few of the products and ask for samples of the others. I have tried some and they were OK. Have you tried Eucerin Redness Relief Face Cream? That might not be the exact name but something like that.

Nancy,

Yup, those are the products I was thinking of too! I would say that I prefer the BHA lotion over the AHA gel. With either of them, make sure that you start VERY slowly with them. Like twice a week, and then build up to more times per week as your skin can tolerate.

I personally didn't like the foundation for normal to dry skin that much. It was too emollient for me. But I am probably not nearly as dry as you, so you might find it more to your liking. My favorite cosmetics products are the blushes, lip paints, lip glosses, eyebrow gel/groomer and mascara! The eyeshadows have a great texture and I tend to prefer something with a bit of a shimmer and hers are matte. I'm not sure about the satisfaction policy with regard to makeup though.

This is a great idea. You can usually get a least 2-3 uses out of each sample.

Wow! I just signed up for Paula's biweekly bulletin and I've already learned a lot. Great bulletin, even if it does advertise her products. I kind of expected that.

Unfortunately, I accidentally signed up 4 times so I'm getting 4 bulletins at once. Will have to try to correct that.

She just reviewed Bare Escentuals rather unfavorably. And I was thinking about trying it! Very helpful.

Nancy, I LOVE the www.dermadoctor.com website. I buy all of my skin care products there. The Dermadoctor is Audrey Kunin, MD, a board certified dermatologist (and a graduate of the Ohio State Univeristy College of Medicine---Go Buckeyes!).

I use the Dermadoctor line but they carry several product lines. The website is loaded with articles covering every skin condition you can think of and they're really great about answering emails if you have a question.

Nancy,

I'm a huge fan of Paula's skin care and cosmetics! My skin is different from yours; I tend to have some oiliness and -- even at 40 -- have to work to avoid breakouts. On the list of your suggested products, I use the Beta Hydroxy lotion (2%) and the Super Antioxidant Concentrate (love that!). As you notice, her prices are great, and I've never been disappointed with anything I've purchased. And isn't the Beauty Bulletin fun? I love how Paula takes the mystery out of cosmetics; I know she has saved me money on things I thought I "needed." Let us know if you give it a try!

Thanks, Michele. I just checked it out. I wish they had a "shop by skin type" with specific recommendations like the Paula website. I really am ready to buy! How did you decide what to buy?

-Nancy

Nancy, do post whatever you decide to go with. My skin is exactly like yours - very, very dry. So dry that when I stay in a hotel - I think it's the sheets and the air - I almost invariably end up using vaseline as my nighttime moisturizer. I had a derma recommend that to me and it actually really works if you are not prone to breakouts.

I am wondering, do you think you need the toner and such? Those products tend to really dry me out and then I turn very red, so I avoid them. What I've found helps with the flaking is a weekly gentle exfoliator.

I'll be interested in your choices!!

I recently purchased Bare Essentials and personally I think it is the best foundation I have ever used. I have sort of ruddy (red) skin and this product gives me a perfect complexion. The first time I ever used it my dh did a double take and said "wow, your skin looks pretty."

Buffy, actually the review was not completely unfavorable for Bare Escentuals. What I probably should have said was that it didn't sound right for me. I did try Bare Escentuals in Sephora one day and it did not look well on me, but I was going to try it again. It looks great on one of my co-workers, though, so I guess it's an individual thing. I believe Paula gave the Mineral Veil a high rating btw.

Hi Nancy,

I too have pretty dry skin that reacts to strong fragrances.

The lines that seem to have worked for me are:

Dermalogica and Sotheys; Have used these for years.

Lately I have been using Korres - its an all natural line - and I am liking it very much - so much so that I ordered their body line also.

All are available at Sephora.

I haven't every seen or tried Paula's line.

Happy shopping. :)

I have oily skin (35 years old and STILL so oily) and I LUV Paula's Choice skin care line. I would literally cry if I couldn't get it anymore b/c it has cleared up my skin like nothing else. I can't believe the difference in my skin since using this skin care. I don't have dry skin, but she does carrry products for all skin types. I can't tell you how much I LUV Paula's Choice!

Me too, Marie. To me, Vaseline is a perfectly viable face moisturizer, and pore-clogging is not an issue. I will definitely let you know what I decide.
-Nancy

Okay, I ordered the Skin Recovery Moisturizer and samples of the toner and the alpha hydroxy stuff. I sure hope the moisturizer isn't just for night, though. Products containing SPF just don't agree with my skin. Will let you all know how it goes.

Brilliant idea about the samples, Marie. I'm really glad you thought of it!

-Nancy

Just wanted to pop in to say be careful with the alpha hydroxy if your skin is dry and peeling--it could easily make it worse. Do you have a allergies? It almost sounds like that type of reaction--I have mild eczema and also some other allergic skin reactions, and it sounds like some of what you described.
