Six packs are showing now....

Hello everyone

Today I noticed -- after parading in front of the mirror after shower -- that those 6 packs are indeed visible now. I always did abs, but lately I've been doing things differently:

do abs before other weights
doing more "core style" abs (KPC,ME,BC,PUB) as opposed to the "traditional" crunches
doing doubles -- 2 ab sessions a day, one in the middle and one at the end of the workout

Just wanted to share the happy news with you guys!

Mari

Show off!!! hahaha I'm just kidding. Good for you! I'm still working on mine. I have a little 2 pack.

Congrats!
Isn't it cool when you can see those changes?
I'm nowhere near 6-pack-ville, but my "two-pack" is looking better all the time! I first got that line down the center (years ago, when I first started weight training), which a former roommate of mine said even her mother, who is a bit heavy, has always had. That was it for a long time, but last year, I started seeing those lines on the sides, and most recently (since doing P90X) they are more defined (more indented). I think I may someday have a 4-pack!

Kathryn,

What is so gruesome about the P90X ab work. Is there more plank work or is the duration of the ab work longer?

the other day - i was showing a co-worker a rash i had developed on my stomach and she freaked! she kept saying " i'm not looking at the rash - i'm looking at those definition lines - the six pack - make me sick!" i felt great though! as for the rash - it turned out to be hives - an allergy to a food i ate.

Great going, Mari! My flabby abs are looking less flabby these days too. I have lines on the sides but am still waiting for the one in the middle! My skin's a bit loose from three pregnancies so I doubt a six-pack is in the cards for me. (Never say never, though!) I'm just happy they're getting stronger. Six days of nontraditional ab work seems to work best for me. How many days a week do you work yours? How about the rest of you?

Rhonda, I started to do more abs maybe 3-4 weks ago. Those doubles are really awesome. And the fact that I do one session when I still have some fuel -- and not the end of the wo -- is really great. My favorite is doing ME and BC on one day.
Susan, I do abs now probably 6 times, doubles maybe 2-4 times.
How is the rest? Well, definitely better than when I was only a runner. Doing less cardio and a lot more weights gave me a better result than anything else I have done in the past.

I wish Cathe would come up with a real tough 60 min core DVD!

I"m sooooooooooooooo jealous. This is my trouble zone. My upper abs look great, it's my lower abs that are bulge out. You can feel my muscles--just can't see them. You can see the line down the middle...and you can see obliques. :)
I do agree, I get better results from core work rather than traditional abs (which feel easy). Cathe's plank work & I want those Abs!! ARe the best workouts in my opinion.

Mari,

Question for you: You said you do the abs before weights, then again in the middle. So, are you doing the warm-up, skipping to the abs, doing the weight work & then tacking on abs right before the cool-down? Also, do you do this only on weight training days, or on cardio days as well? If you do it on cardio days, how do you break that down? Sorry for all the questions, but I'm sick of my ab flab and I want to try to reaaaally shock that body part into shape this month. I'm starting HIIT-type workouts, so I think the combination will get me where I've always wanted to go -flat stomachville!!

Thanks for the tip and congrats on your success! I can't believe you got this great result within 4 weeks of starting, You Rock (Just like those ABS!!)

I think it's just the accumulation of the exercises. There are no traditional crunches, no planks, but a lot of pilates-like and yoga-like moves, such as balancing on your butt and bringing the legs and upper body in and out. You do Ab ripper X (which is 15 minutes long) three times a week, but the heavy lifting I think also calls on the abs for support and burns more calories.

I try to do both weights and cardio every day. Usually I do about 20-30 min cardio, then core style abs. After that comes weights du jour and some more abs at the end -- if I want to do abs twice.
I really believe that doing abs at the beginning makes a big difference. If you only do cardio and abs, the order -- I guess -- would depend on the intensity of your cardio. If it's easy you can still do quality abs at the end. But if you do a heavy duty HIIT you may want to do abs at the beginning. I hope this helps!

Best of luck to you

Mari
