Sit and Stands on Cathe's videos

Hi Cathe, hi fans, I was wondering if my form is incorrect when doing the sit & stands on your PS Strong legs. I did this tape yesterday, and I looked in the mirror, and noticed that although I tried keeping my back upright, I saw that my chest was very close to my thighs as my butt came off the step and as I was holding, my chest continued to lower even more. Is this improper form, am I using too much weight (barbell 30 lbs)? Am I puting unnecessary strain on my back? You know, it's amazing how I think I'm always using proper form, but when I look in the mirror, I don't always see that. I will be using a mirror each and every time I workout from now on, but I do need to know if this position matters or not. Thank you.
 
Hi Lourdy! It does sound as if you are leaning too far forward. The best thing to do when trying to master your form is to do the exercise with no weight. Then as your form improves, gradually work your way up to a weight that you can safely handle while maintaining good form and technique.

Practice tips:

1) Using no weight whatsoever with your hands down naturally at your sides, sit down in a chair and take notice of your body's natural alignemnt. Notice that your chest was most likely more upright.

2) Now attempt this again (with no weight), but this time put your arms up pretending to have your imaginary barbell on your back. Pay special attention to your chest. Make sure it stays as naturally upright as it did with the previous exercise.

3) Once you have mastered this, attempt to do 5 sit n' stands in a row with your imaginary dumbell, paying very close attention to form. Making sure that your chest stays in the same natural alignment that it was in during step one.

4) Once you have mastered this technique, you can gradually begin to add weight to your sit n' stand exercises, only increasing the weight if you are able to maintain proper form.

Thanks Cathe, I did think that something was wrong. I'm practicing your tips on my chair at my desk today, and the difference is very noticeable. It is obvious that I was using too much weight and wrong form. Thanks again.
