Silly question about water breaking...

OIC. Ask him if it would be okay for you to stay at home, even if your water breaks, and you are having good contractions. Laboring at home really is wonderful! You get privacy and lots of freedom. I think that having you go to the hospital as soon as your water breaks is just a precaution. Women were having babies long before pennicilin and I am sure their water broke, too. And really, how many women do you know who had to get an antibiotic drip because their water broke and got an infection? I feel a soapbox coming on... Just remember to do whatever makes you feel comfy and safe, and good luck tomorrow! You have two and a half weeks left! AAGH!

Trust me...if the doc says I can stay home for a while after my water breaks...I WILL! :) Unless, ofcourse, DH gets real nervous and wants to go sooner...he's not very calm about this whole process! ;-)

Wendy, with my first DD my water breaking was the first sign of labour. I was advised to go to the hospital immediately, let them monitor me and the baby for a bit to make sure all was okay, and then request to go back home and labour there, if all was well. After a couple of hours of being hooked up to the baby monitor, and having my cervix checked (barely dilated), I was released to go home again. When the baby still hadn't arrived by the next morning, I had to go back to the hospital, get monitored again, and got to go back home again (the contractions had stalled). My contractions really got going by that evening, so I went back to the hospital around midnight, and delivered her at noon the next day. It was a loooong labour, but the contractions kept coming and going. Had my labour not finally progressed on that last morning, they would have induced me. My doctor was comfortable going 48 hours with broken membranes, but that was it.

So I guess my point is: if your water breaks, go to the hospital immediately, get monitored, then tell them you want to go home again.

Cheers,
Sandra

I know my sister (with her 2nd I think it was) was sent home from the hospital after her water broke and labor did not start. She was told to come back when labor started or NO LATER than 12 hours later so that they could induce. I guess they just like to check you out once your water breaks but won't neccessarily keep you...

Wendy, please check with your doctor... sorry it is the former OB/Gyn NP in me. There are other reasons besides infection, but I don't want to scare anyone. Just take your doctor's advice.

Thanks Autumn. Don't worry...I'll be calling my doc when the time comes...:)
