Oh, this is cool! My fifth grade class has adopted a soldier, and we send Christmas care packages, as well as lots of drawings and little gifts from the kids. They say it really helps, especially when they're stuck in Iraq at Christmas time.

Thank you Wendy--this is a great idea. Every year for Christmas, instead of buying gifts for each other, my siblings and I pool our resources and make a charitable donation in our parent's name. We were just talking about what to do this year and now I have the answer.
