Shoulder pain

Hi all

I always seem to get pain in my right shoulder when I do press-ups (full or bent knees). I don't really get it when lifting weights though. Does anyone else have the same sort of thing? And any ideas on possible modifications to avoid it? Or am I just doing them wrong?

I just got Muscle Max and am really enjoying it (if that's the right word!) but struggling with the press up section because of my shoulder.

Thanks!

Ronne, do you mean pushups? If so, have you changed your hand position (wider or narrower position)? Maybe try them with your hands on the step or on hand weights if that's comfortable. If nothing alleviates the pain, I would substitute a chest press or fly. You don't want to risk a shoulder injury. Those can be VERY difficult to rehab.

I don't think any of us here is qualified to diagnose injury or structural problems, and it sounds like you might have a structural problem. I suggest you talk to a physical therapist or sports-medicine involved chiropractor about it. They can figure out what might be wrong and give you some exercises to do to help.

One thing you can try is to reduce the intensity of your push-ups and build back up gradually. Start with your hands on a wall, then when you can do a couple of sets of push-ups with no problems, move to hands on a kitchen counter. Then hands on the seat of a kitchen chair or the edge of the bathtub. Then on top of a step set at 12". Then 10", etc. You get the idea.

Also make sure to keep your shoulder girdle in good position: keeping shoulder 'back and down' as you do the move, and not allowing your body to 'hang off' your shoulder.
