Shopping at the Gap

Okay, so I need some stuff to wear on the weekends. I noticed yesterday that I was wearing one of the Gap t-shirts I bought 2 years ago for like, I don't know, $12 each or something. I wear them all the time, and prefer them to some much more expensive t-shirts I have because they're made with this Modal fabric, which is super soft. Also, I've noticed that I'm STILL wearing the shorts and sweatpants I bought at the Gap in 1989. No exaggeration. Finally the lightbulb went on. I should be shopping at the Gap! Duh.

Any tips for shopping there? Has anyone found any great low-waisted, flattering but cozy pants to knock around in during the winter? Or any super soft but flattering tops?

I can't wait to go as soon as I figure out which of the 53 stores in Manhattan I should go to. :p Thanks!

Hey Nancy. Girl I have never bought anything from the Gap until last weekend. I wanted a pair of Cords and boy did I find them I bought 2 pair and of course I want the rust color and they are out of them so I have to keep checking back even online is out of my size in that color. I have a 20% coupon to use and I don't know if I order from another store if I can use it plus I have to pay shipping.

They are low waisted I got them in eggplant (I think) and steel blue AWESOME! they are $54.00 but so worth it I went in to get my normal size 7-9 and I walked out in 4's. Soft and comfy and flap pockets on behind but fit great.

I have enough jeans so I must put blinders on when I go in.

Good Luck let us know what you think.

Hey Nancy:

I haven't been shopping at The Gap in quite awhile, but I did work there in the late 80's and totally identified with your comment about wearing something you bought there from way back then! My best friend and I were Asst. Mgrs and LOVED the employee discounts. My friend still has sweaters and such from that time that she still wears! they used to be really long lasting and quality merchandise! (I'm sure they still are) I remember moving a few years after I quit and my family laughing hysterically at my sock drawer! I had a virtual rainbow of crew socks... long story short, there were many days where our UPT's (units per transaction) sales figures were lower than the 2.0 daily goal, so we would buy the $.99 socks on sale to help with the averages! I also hear some of the songs they would play on the "canned music disks" and could tell you the songs before and after one if I hear it on the radio or something... UGH! not much variety and working 40 hours a week, well... you get the picture...

When I get a bit more "fit" and start needing to buy new pants, I will definately check them out again... The Gap was the only place I could find "short" jeans that actually fit someone with curves!

Happy shopping and let us know what you select!

The cords sound awesome, Beth! I will definitely look for them. I will report back Dani! Isn't it amazing how high quality that stuff was? I think my Gap stuff is the only apparel I have left from the 80s.

Hi Nancy--

I went to Gap online and bought a neat little flannel dress and tights to go with it. I wear it with these wonderful tissue turtlenecks from J. Crew (also bought online). Very comfy and soft. I also like the Boden "mouching" pants (I guess that's Brit slang for lounging about). Really soft as well. Also bought online (Bodenusa.com). I love their dresses.

As you can tell, I hate shopping where I live, because I have to drive about 45 min. to any place worth looking.

If you are still looking for mysteries, Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was absolutely spellbinding.

Nancy, you want some seriously cute lounging around pants? Here ya go! I just got these in black...ordered a medium, maybe should have ordered a small, they are super duper soft, and you can roll the nonbinding waistband down as far as you want...they look cute on the butt and are so worth the moola I swear it! Plus, this web site rocks, they ship super quick.

I used to be a jeans freak! I'd shop for days looking for just the perfect pair of jeans. I never could seem to find any that fit me just perfectly, no matter what I paid for them.

One day I happened upon a pair of GAP bootcut jeans at Marshall's. Yay! They fit me just right and they were actually LONG enough. So, I bought those and went staight to the GAP and started buying Classic GAP bootcut jeans. I haven't bought anything else since. Love 'em! (They're reasonably priced too... especially compared to some of the higher end, high $$ jeans!)

Nancy - I don't know b/c I've never purchased pants at at the Gap, but I love that store. I just wanted to say love your new avatar. :)

Well, I'm back and I did well. Beth, the cords were great but unfortunately were way too long on me. I got a cozy fleece outfit that I really like. Tneah, I can't figure out which pants you got on that website. BTW, the Gap has underwear that looks a lot like the Hanky Panky stuff you introduced me to, but is half the price. I think I might try them.

Thanks, Suz. I like yours too. Don't you wish they were a bit bigger so we could see them better?

Thank you. Yeah, they're so tiny. When they first changed the forum I tried clicking on them to make them bigger. Nope. :)

Nancy, they are the drapey ones, I think they show them in three different colors, black, brown and grey? They should be right there when you click on the link..cool about the panties, will have to check that out since the HP's can get spendy.

Oh Gap. I LOVE their clothes and they have plenty of talls for my giant self. I like their jeans- the Essential ones are my "mom" jeans- midrise so I'm never baring my arse while lifting the kiddos. They are a nice straight fit and look good. The Long and Lean are my more "going out" jeans- very nice and fitted through the leg and a slightly lower rise, although not obnoxious. I have a pair of the Curvy fit but I'm built like Spongebob, so they aren't my favorite. But the best is the perfect amount of stretch in them- enough so they are super comfy but not so much that the damn things fall off after wearing them once.

Oh Patti, I love your signature!

tneah, they are gorgeous, but I cannot wear the pants with the fold-over tops, as they highlight and thicken the worst part of my body!

Me too Nance!!! I can't wear the Gap pants... or BR... or ON. :( But I love their tops!!! :) Bought two shirts Friday that I've had on continuously since! :p

Adina, those look gorgeous! Just my style too.

I know this is going to sound weird, but where do people wear jeans? I wear them very seldom. I can't wear them to work, and they're too constricted for me to lounge around in on the weekends. I like comfy, cozy pants on the weekends. I have one pair of Lucky jeans, which I wear for social "occasions" like going out to dinner with friends, but that's it. One pair seems to be all I need. I got these with the matching vest at the Gap:

Ame, I can wear Gap pants when they come in the "short" length, but the cords only came in "regular". I would imagine the short length would work well for you too, considering how many different styles they have, no?

Nancy, I wear jeans whenever I go out, shopping, out to eat, wherever, they a staple in my wardrobe. If I'm staying home I just throw on some sweats, the one's you got look cute and comfy. I just may have to order a pair. ;)

Nancy, I love the fleece pants. How long are they? I can't seem to find it. I'm only 5'1" and was wondering if they came in short.
